I found a map on the web of the Naish Scout Reservation. I'm trying to find out how to get original copies.
The map's title block has labeled:
Recreation Map
KS 2c Jan., 1992
U.S. Orienteering Federation
P.O. Box 1444, Forest Park, GA
It also references Orienteer Kansas in Lawrence KS. Do you have maps, and how can we obtain them?
Thanks much.

Say it aint so, Mook! Shutting down the Unofficial OK Homepage? The Great One of Unofficialdom has gone. He'll surely miss this wonderful game. But, like Michael Jordan, he may resurface in North Carolina with a new website?

Finally, we got to see the lodging pictures from Yellowstone...but they were well worth waiting for. The picture taken over the Mammoth Hot Springs area is just wonderful.
I bet it was a bit hard to get Mary out of bed...
See you soon!

I like your night pictures. It looks like a winter night some where in Sweden. I still miss the analysis of Possum Trout II. Are you working on them?

Hallo Mike!
I dont know if you remember me from St Louis OC
in the middle 80-ties. I and Lars was there making maps and travelling around!
It was really fun to look at the short course!
How would it be to run close to the lake on the
left side on the second leg? Is it open or semiopen land?
My best OL-wishes Mats

Subject: course review
Since there was interest here in course reviews (even ones from a little
while back), I have republished the discussion of leg 3 to 4 of the day
2 Red course of the 1996 New England Championships. (This is a long
route choice leg. Posters describe the routes they took, and how they
worked out. Comments republished with permission.)
It's at http://www.concentric.net/~jimbaker/red3to4
(Hey, if you didn't come to the event, what does it matter if it's a
year old? :)
Really, seriously, the review of the 1996 US Short Course Champs was
fun. It'd be fun to have more like these online. Might be fun to have
one for a Billygoat...(if someone has the comments and splits from the
event, and an OCD (1996) or bitmap (1997) file of the map, I could
probably be persuaded to put together a web site for some year...just
help me get permission).
Are there other event directors and course setters who thought you had
fun courses or interesting route choice legs? Put out a site! Let us
all post-mortem together online. (Beats shivering outside at -23C. :)

Subject: Re: web site with a course analysis
It is always interesting to see analysis of the orienteering routes.
On control nr. 5 I think both runners made a clear error if their
purpose really was to run towards the control point and to try
to identify the bends of the path in front because the control
point is a broad reentrant and there is a ditch behind the control.
The only similar feature is on the north side!
The text implies that their primary method of finding the control
would have been to read the features in front of the control (i.e.
the bends of the path) instead of the CONTOURS which in this
case would take you to the control point much easier and faster!
By running a bit more to south to the bend of the road (where
it starts bending to left!) and by continuing exactly to the same
direction downhill or only a bit to north would have brought
them exactly to the correct reentrant, because after the down
slope they would have known for sure to turn to right! There
would have been no chance of making an error, and thus by
reading only the contours they could have run to the control
point without a stop. Also the yellow part becomes longer!
In Finland we call this method as "the lengthening of the
control point"! In this case it would have made the map
reading totally unnecessary. One can easily remember such a
route with only one glance on the map! Running towards the
control point is always very risky!

Hi Spike!
In looking back over the course and reading your comments, I think James' early lead was a combination of running fast and my losing more time to #4 than would be apparent from the map. I think really my route should bulge a good bit further from the bee
ine than it does, and I probably even stopped to figure out what was going on. That would'nt be 25 seconds I suspect, but it would be more than just a few...

Very impressed with the work on showing portions of the maps with the comments. The animation was GREAT. How much time did it take you to create this display? We may have nominate you to do this for all championship races in the future.
