Seattle Starbucks after WTO protestors got done with the place (1999)

Not that you didn’t know that already, but this Coffee empire is out to ruin lives and destroy cultures of many nations. Typical of AmeriKKKan conglomerates, Starbucks is profiting at the expense of the poor. While wannabe-yuppie-fashion-victims sip their $3 (U.S.) lattes, Central American coffee growers are being paid 50¢ per pound of coffee. It takes 80¢ to produce one pound of coffee for these growers. Yes, they are losing money. In addition, Starbucks is the only specialty coffee company that won't certify 5% of its coffee as "fair trade."

Starbucks employees are overworked working irregular hours. Starbucks also refused to pay mandated overtime, which resulted in an $18 million (U.S.) settlement with disgruntled California store employees. A former Starbucks manager was expected to sign an affidavit pledging to work up to 20 hours a week with no extra pay, although this has been dropped since a settlement.

They also participate in "predatory real estate" tactics, where competitors' store landlords are offered double the market rate to keep out the competition. Another example of this tactic is when Starbucks continued to pay rent in vacant premises to shut out other coffee joints.

People, lets say 'no' to bad and overpriced coffee. For every Starbucks, there usually are higher-quality alternatives. Support your local coffee joint, especially if it serves up good java!
