Duchy of Novanglia

Oh, kithain of Novanglia,
You poor and sorry dears,
Your every leader, duke or count,
Goes mad or disappears.

Game Over

Novanglia is the (non-canonical) faerie realm roughly equivalent to Massachusetts. It has had a long and troubled history, but its history became even more troubled four years ago, when player characters showed up.

This is the homepage of an episodic Changeling LARP that has been running as a series of mini-chronicles and connected one-shots since 1998. The last game was held Saturday, June 22, 2002 at Boston University. Whether there is ever another installment depends on general interest, including my own. If you feel like reading through it, the Site map / table of contents leads to a lot of background info and house rules, including conversions from tabletop for things like dark-kin and merfolk or various Merits and Flaws. Feedback for those especially is always appreciated; I'm especially interested in whether other Changeling storytellers find them useful.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the last game! I think it turned out well, and even people who are outspoken in their opinions of games are saying so. So yay that. Whether there's a sequel next summer, or any other time, depends; I went into the game thinking it was time to move on, but perhaps there is indeed room for more stories in Novanglia, or "meanwhile" in a neighboring realm, or what-have-you.

In the meantime, here are brief summaries of the last couple of games. These could be fleshed out and get their own pages at some point. As for the last game, while I am not asking for "chrons," if you would care to send me at any time your version of events, I could at some point blow off dissertation work by trying to build everything into a coherent narrative.

Highsummer Night, 2001: Deceit and Betrayal

The fiendish selkie Professor Poseidon's kidnapping of beloved nocker scientist and statesman Matthias Scroop distracted the majority of kithain while the arguably more fiendish Duke Nicholas ap Balor sacrificed himself in a dark ritual designed either to delay or hasten (depending on whom you ask) the return of the Fomorians to the waking world. Scroop escaped from his kidnappers along with the device the Professor had him build: a machine that amplifies kithain Arts over a great distance. The formerly kinain chamberlain Sir Daniel -- who Chrysalized as a selkie himself towards the evening's end -- helped broker a deal whereby Baron Corwin ap Gwydion and Baroness Jacqueline ap Eiluned would serve as Winter and Summer regents until Duke Sean should return or be given up for lost, and whereby a duchy-wide Parliament would provide commoners with real input in the governing of the duchy and power over the regency and succession.

Would this new Arrangement continue to keep Novanglia out of the civil war? Would the army of Dark-Kin massing to the north bring a more terrible war to the Kingdom of Apples? Would either of the new co-rulers of Novanglia go mad or missing before the next game?

Midsummer Night, 2002: Transformations

(rough version)

The Asterlan/Sean sightings turned out to be real: Duke Sean was Asterlan's reincarnation, which he remembered when he went into the Dreaming on a personal quest over a year ago. He led Thom, a troll, and Leopold, a pooka, to an alcoholic homeless man who, it was later realized, was none other than the long-missing High King David, permanently Undone.

An eshu freedom fighter managed to get unofficial Novanglian aid in forcibly reforming the oppressive Duchy of Granite (NH). Granite is to become a part of Novanglia, with representatives on Parliament, but its own "Home Rule."

An attack from Queen Mab, meant to recover the renegade province of Novanglia, was imminent, until Mab's own bases were attacked by the forces of Eloise, Admiral of Nightmare, remembered in Novanglia as a carefree childling troll with pretensions of piratehood.

Chancellor Sir Daniel performed the become-a-fomorian ritual that Duke Nicholas did last year.

Thom the troll, a reluctant fae, performed his own ritual (provided by the dragon-sage Grimfang) that transferred his fae soul into a wand, which he then chose to pass on to David, who re-chrysalized as a troll with all of David's memories. Baroness Jacqueline stepped down in David's favor.

A full-scale nightmare invasion of Novanglia via a gate at the palace of the Wire Man (a strange chimera from the 1998 chronicle who later died mysteriously), led by Duke Nicholas the Betrayer himself (as a Fomorian of the Red Court), was foiled ultimately when Matthias Scroop, aided by Amadeus Crabtree, hooked up the silver ball found on Cape Cod into one of the Wire Man's machines that forced the gate closed. Unfortunately, in order to work it properly, Scroop had to become the new Wire Man.

During the battle that raged while the nockers got the machine working, Duke Asterlan was killed by Nicholas.
