Soon after their marriage in 1832 James and Julia moved from Mason Co., KY to Washington Twp., Daviess Co., IN where James was a contractor and built the first brick courthouse there.
1840 Census:
James M. Berry died in Washington Twp., Daviess Co., Indiana in 1845.
"Julia A. Berry, daughter of William and Nancy Berry, was born in Mason County, Kentucky, December 11, 1811. She was married to J. M. Berry in 1832, and moved to Washington, Davies county, Ind., where her husband built the first court house of that county. She was left a widow in 1845 and she and her two children C. A. and A. J. Berry moved back to her Kentucky home. She was married to William M. Peed in 1850 and assumed the duties of step mother to ten children. How well and faithfully she performed these duties can be attested by them. William Peed and family moved to Henry county, Indiana, in 1856 and settled on Flat Rock. She was left a widow a second time, her husband dying April 15, 1879. She has since made her home with her son Alex. Berry, where she died Feb. 18, 1888. Aged 76 years 2 months and 7 days. One son, Madison Peed was the result of her last marriage. She had looked forward with bright anticipations to a visit from him ere this, but a Kind Providence has provided a meeting for them where there will be no separation. In her last moments she spoke of seeing this beloved one. The subject of this obituary was converted and joined the Baptist church under the preaching of Rev. Norris, in 1842. She remained a member of that church until 1880 when she united with the Christian church at Bethel, Indiana. In her home life she always manifested a sweet and patient disposition. She was never known to be angry, but always caring for her family with untiring care. She was very happy on her death bed. She requested that some one sing to her "O, Come Angel Band" and "Sowing the Seed," while this was being done she tried to sing with them, at the same time shouting the praises of "Him who hath loved us and died that we might live." She was ready to go, at times saying, "O, why can't I go now." So close to unselfish Christian life. There are left two sons, C. A. and A. J. Berry, fourteen grandchildren, [?] great-grandchildren - one sister and brother and six step children --John, J. L. and Frank Peed, Mrs. S. Fletcher, Mrs. Mag. Stafford and Hanna Self, who is living in Texas. May the seed sown in the hearts of these who are left bring forth much fruit to the glory of God." (New Castle Indiana Courier, Fri Mar 2, 1888)

In February 1850 Alex’s mother remarried and Alex apparently moved back to Daviess County (or did he remain there when his mother moved back to KY?) where he was living in the home of William Hyatt by the summer of 1850.

Son Charles M. Berry born in October 1858 (Daviess Co., IN or Mason Co., KY?).
William Hyatt, with whom Alex lived as a young boy in 1850, may have moved to Madison Co., IN by 1858/59 as his son William Jr. may have been born there at that time.

Alex contracted typhoid pneumonia in November 1896 and died on December 3.
His obituary from the ‘New Castle Indiana Democrat’, Friday December 11, 1896 reads: “Death of C. A. Berry - Charles A. Berry commonly known as "Alex," died last Thursday night after an illness of a few weeks. Mr. Berry came to this county from Kentucky a good many years ago. He was married and leaves a large family, all the children being grown. He was a great lover of fine horses and stock of all kinds and did much for this county in that line. The funeral which was held on Sunday afternoon was largely attended. Interment at South Mound.”
His Death Certificate lists his parents as William Craig & Nancy Mogle but more recent evidence shows that he was the son of James Madison Berry & Julia Ann Berry (herself the daughter of William & Nancy Berry).

Charles was listed as 8 months old on the 1860 census.
On the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Charles was living on Pennsylvania Ave., New Castle 128/142, birth listed as Oct 1858.
"...Charles M. Berry shot himself twice about 10 o'clock Saturday morning. The shots were fired with suicidal intent and he died next morning at 4 o'clock. He was the proprietor of the "Glee Club" saloon on East Street and head of the firm of Berry Bros., manufacturers of pop and mineral waters. Few men were better known in the community and he was regarded as a practical, hard-headed man whose last thought would be self-destruction.
Prior to the tragedy Saturday morning Mr. Berry had been driving about the town with Spence Bufkins, one of his employees, but went home, saying his wife was not feeling well. This was true as she was in bed with a nervous attack. Their two children were in the room when he arrived. He took off his coat, threw himself across the foot of the bed and pulled out his revolver. He said nothing to his wife and she knew nothing of his intention until she heard two shots in quick succession. Frightened almost out of her senses she reached for him and grasped the revolver, not knowing whether he intended to shoot at her or himself. She screamed and several neighboring women ran in to find Berry lying with two great holes in his left breast, from which blood was streaming. The first men to arrive were W. H. Abbott and Jay Province of Mt. Summit. The later was a very close friend of Berry, who said to him: "I'm in a bad fix Jay. I was not good to my wife," referring to his first wife, who died a year ago last spring.
Two physicians who had been called, arrived in a few minutes. An examination showed that both bullets had taken effect, one perforating the left lung and lodging under the skin of his back. It was seen at once that this would prove fatal and that death would result in a few hours. The injured man did not lose consciousness and talked freely to his friends who called, bout would not give any reason for his action other than he wanted to die.
Many surmises have been made as to the cause of the deed. Some say it was financial difficulties, others that it was brooding over his first wife, whom, he told different persons, he had not treated right. It is said that during the spiritualist's meeting at Chesterfield in August the attended one Sunday and had a conversation with the spirit of his departed wife, who talked with him of his past life, saying she was happy now and asking him to come to here. This, so the report goes, has weighted heavily on his mind ever since and on two or three occasions he has told friends that he was going "to shoot himself and end all his troubles." His threat was not taken seriously and nothing thought of it until the tragedy of Saturday morning. Many persons do not give this latter version much credence.
Mr. Berry had one child, Bonnie, aged seven, by his first wife. He married the wife who survives him three or four months ago. She is a daughter of Luther W. Modlin and this was her third marriage. Her second husband was Felix Veach, who also committed suicide, but they were not living together at the time. No trouble, however, is known to have occurred between Berry and her, the general opinion being that this death was brought about by financial matters or remorse over the treatment of his wife.
The deceased was about forty-five year old. He was a son of the late Alex. Berry, who lived southeast of town for many years. He has several brothers, among whom are Horace, his partner in the pop factory, Omar and Luther." (New Castle, Indiana Democrat, Friday November 6, 1903)

“R. D. Berry, the well known horseman and brother of Charles and Horace Berry of this city, died in Indianapolis Tuesday evening after an illness of several weeks. The remains will be brought to New Castle Thursday afternoon on the 4 o'clock train and the funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.. Friday in charge of the Knights of Pythias. Mr. Berry was a popular young man and one of the most competent horsemen in the United States.” (New Castle Indiana Courier, Wednesday May 14, 1902)
"R. D. Berry, familiarly known as Dick, died at his home in Indianapolis Tuesday evening after a long illness. Last fall he was taken with rheumatism in the back supposed to have been brought on by the strain of constantly driving race horses, he being one of the finest professional trainers in the state. He suffered all winter and a few weeks ago had a stroke of paralysis. Brain trouble then developed and for the past two weeks there had been no hope of his recovery. He was 32 years old and a son of the late Alex. Berry of this county. His mother survives him, as do also his brothers, Charles and Horace Berry of New Castle, and Omar, Matt, Will, Carl and Luther, who left here several years ago. His sisters are Miss Effie Berry and Mrs. Emma Bicknell. Three years ago he was married and the young widow is left to mourn his untimely death. Dick Berry was a young man liked by everybody who knew him and popular with his friends who sincerely regret his loss. The remains were brought here yesterday afternoon and the funeral will be held to-day under the auspices of Crescens K. of P. lodge, of which he was a member." "...What a great lady she was! She never had a bad word for anybody. Her concern was for others, frequently asking, what can I do? Her greeting and ready smile immediately made one welcome. Her patience was amazing. She had no antagonisms. In fact, the antagonisms that developed around her troubled her wonderful spirit, but she kept on loving and always tried to develop a better understanding. She accepted, though did not always understand the faults and foibles, and the misunderstandings, of her loved ones. She knew that love would overcome, if not immediately then sometime in the future...." [Memorial Service for Effie May Mills by Myron C. Cole, D. D., Dec. 21, 1974]
