Ergonomics
Ergonomics is the science of designing equipment and working environments so that they are comfortable and safe and that they ensure maximum efficiency. Problems can often be caused if people have to keep carrying out the same task hour after hour, such as using a keyboard. One major difficulty that may result from constantly using a keyboard is repetitive strain injury (RSI). This results in numbness, pain and tingling in the fingers. In general, there are a number of important guidelines.

  1. It is very important to sit so that arms, wrists and fingers are relaxed and supported. Your wrists should be straight and higher than your fingers. This means that the height of the chair is important, so the seat height should be adjustable.
  2. Another possible problem is back pain. The chair back should be adjustable to allow it to support your back so that it is comfortable to sit upright.
  3. The monitor screen should not emit glare or have reflections in it. This means that overhead lights should have diffusers so that no direct light shines onto the monitor.
  4. The monitor should be adjusted so that it is angled towards your face so that it is comfortable to look at what you are doing.
  5. Your feet also need to be supported either flat on the floor or on a footrest.
  6. There should be space under the table to easily change the position of your legs.
