LARRY THE Y, NINJA TURTLE

Larry the Y was adopted 13 May 2008 from the front desk at the YMCA. Larry was rescued from a swimming pool and brought to work where he was placed at the front desk for adoption. Larry has a 1" diameter shell and is a red ear slider turtle. Normally these are not sold in stores until they are 4" long. Having experience in owning turtles, this little guy was adopted and will be the class mascot. Periodically, Larry will come to class. Larry now lives in a plastic shoe box. This species needs warmth and does require a heat source. Larry enjoys the heat from an old-fashioned desk lamp with an incandescent bulb. Larry is an aquatic turtle and requires water and a deck raised above the water. A seashell is added into the tank for calcium which helps keep the turtle's shell healthy. The water can be as high as the shell's diameter.

Larry was initially placed with a larger turtle who unfortunately thought Larry was food. Fortunately, Larry was a turtle. Knowing that the shared arrangement wasn't going to work, Larry now has his own turtle apartment and only socializes with Jeremy the Ninja Turtle on dry land. Aquatic turtles can not swallow food on dry land.

Jeremy is a male red ear slider with a 5" diameter shell and measures about 8" from tip of nose to tail. Jeremy was adopted from a military family moving to Hawaii. Back then (Spring 2002), he was just a bit bigger than Larry. Their oldest son adopted a number of pets while working at PetSmart. Jeremy now lives in the biggest plastic storage container available. He walks around the house in the evenings.
