In The Spotlight
Davina Y. Barnes

.A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of talking with Davina. When I received her photographs to publish in the gallery she appeared to be the same old "Dee." Ten minutes into our telephone conversation I realized I was wrong. Dee had matured into an intelligent, professional and highly motivated woman. She currently resides in Jacksonville, Florida where she works as a Research Support Analyst for Chase Bank. As she talked about her life I could since the confidence in her voice. In fact, during our interview it became clear that in a lot of ways, Davina Barnes is the same "Dee." She's still fearless!

Lucretia: When did you move to Florida?

Davina Barnes: I moved back to Florida in 1996.

L: Had you lived in Florida before?

D: Yes. My family is originally from St. Augustine, Florida. St. Augustine is the oldest city in Florida.

L: How did you arrive at Wyatt?

D: We moved to Ft. Worth when I was in the eighth grade.

L: Does "Nikki" (aka Bettina) live in Jacksonville, also?

D: No. Nikki went to visit a relative in New Jersey and decided to stay there.

L: Dee, you were voted class clown (along with Quintence McBride) during our senior year. Are you still a clown?

D: Of course!!

L: What did you do after our high school graduation?

D: I went to Hill College for two years where I played basketball.

L: So you still play basketball?

D: Recreationally. Not like I use to. Now I play a lot of softball.

L: Do you ever keep in touch with any of your old teammates from the basketball or volleyball teams?

D: Helena [White] came to visit me about  two years ago. But other than her, I haven't talked with anyone.

L: Are you excited about the Reunion?

D: Yes. I can't wait to see how people have changed. I've already started planning my trip.

L: If you could name one person you would most like to see, who would that person be?

D: That's hard to answer because I would like to see everyone.

L: Other than softball and work, what activities occupy your time?

D: Well, I'm actively involved in my church. I do video and tape duplications and I'm currently assisting in the design and layout for our church bulletin.

L: You have a creative side.

D: In the near future I would like to pursue a career in graphics design. I like doing creative things like web design, graphic layouts, etc.

L: Are you currently enrolled in any web design classes?

D: No, not at the moment. I'm going to let my job pay for it.

L: Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

D: Spending time enjoying my life with my family.

L: Ok, you know I have to ask about your personal life.

D: [laughing] Go ahead.

L: Are you married or dating anyone?

D: I've been dating a wonderful man for the past five years. His name is Cunard.

L: How did the two of you meet?

D: We met at a restaurant back in June of '96.

L: Any children in your future?

D: Yes of course. A wonderful son and a beautiful daughter.

L: Dee, I notice in your pictures that you are still in good shape. How do you maintain your high school weight?

D: Well that I really can't answer because I don't really know myself, but I can tell you this...I do eat a lot, but because I'm so active I guess that helps a little.

L: So you live healthy?

D: Not on purpose.

L: This has been great, Dee. Thank you for your time. I look forward to seeing you at the Reunion.

D: Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of your wonderful Spotlight Edition. May GOD bless you.
