| ST. KITTS � NEVIS FIRE & RESCUE SERVICES GUIDELINES
The St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services became severed by Law from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force on the 4th January in the year 2000 under the Fire and Rescue Services Act 6/99. Thus the new St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services was born. This marked a very significant milestone documented in the pages of history for the Government and people of the twin nation Federation and the Fire and Rescue Services as a separate and distinct entity. There are two Divisions, St. Kitts Division and the Nevis Division, and divided into four municipal and two aerodrome areas, they are: Municipal Aerodrome 1. Basseterre (headquarters) 1. Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw (R.L.B.) International Airport 2. Sandy Point 2. Vance Amory International Airport. 3. Tabernacle 4. Charlestown, Nevis HOW TO JOIN Applicants between 18 & 35 years old can be enlisted in the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire & Rescue Services. The steps are as follows: - Collect an Application Form from the Headquarters or Administration Office at Ponds Pasture, Basseterre. - Complete and return the Application Form - Follow the instructions on the Form - The applicant will be informed of the Entry Examination date - If successful the applicant will be notified of the interview date. WHAT IS THE JOB OF A FIRE OFFICER To control and extinguish fires, protect lives and property, maintain equipment and participate in other Departmental and National functions. WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF A FIRE OFFICER To respond to fire alarm and emergency calls, maintain quarters, equipments, check, hydrants, and participate in drills, demonstrations and courses involving current firefighting techniques, equipment maintenance and operations, and non-fire emergency procedures, These duties are generally performed under dangerous and hazardous conditions. Officers in this category are expected to be capable of reacting with speed and composure under these conditions and must be able to exercise initiative and independence in judgment in determining the proper course of action. Duties are generally performed under the guidance of an immediate supervisor who evaluates performance through observation. WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF A FIRE OFFICER - To respond to fire, emergency and non-emergency calls. - To wear protective clothing when participating in fires or hazardous situations and as directed by higher authority - To protect/preserve the scene of the fire or accident, all evidence that may indicate the cause. - To search, rescue and perform fire suppression operations. - To provide First Aid assistance to casualties, and to extricate victims from damaged vehicles when necessary. - To carry out routine fire prevention inspections and inspect fire hydrants - To use Breathing Apparatus Sets, hand tools and associated equipment when instructed by the officer in charge. - To participate in drills, demonstrations lectures or other forms of training to keep up to date on current firefighting techniques and rescue operations. - To perform control room duties. - To perform any other related duties as required. |
| FIRE SERVICES IN NEVIS (PROFILE)
The Promotion of the establishment of the �Fire Brigade� on Nevis was passed into law on October 30 in 1872, this principle legislation is referred to as Ordinance 19/1872. This Ordinance was amended by Ordinance 3/1958. The establishment was 1 Captain, 1 Lieutenant and 25 men enlisted for 12 months appointed by the Administrator. The payment for the Lieutenant was $2.40 and the men 60�. - In Fire Brigade became part of the Leeward Island Police Force in 1956. - In 1959, the Fire Brigade became part of the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Police Force. - In 1983, the Fire Brigade became part of the St. Kitts-Nevis Police Force. - In Chapter 181 of the Police Ordinance Fire Officers were qualified to be Special Constables. - In January 4th 2000, the Fire Brigade was separated from the St. Kitts-Nevis Police Force and became a separate entity by an act of Parliament No. 6/99 thereby assuming the name �The St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services�. The present establishment stands at Twenty-Three (23) men; its appliances stands at three (3), two (2) in Charlestown and one (1) at the Vance Amory International Airport.
