Best tourist fun: Congress Avenue Bats
description: Approximately 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats, the largest urban bat colony in North America, have made the underside of the Congress Avenue bridge their summer home. The bats began congregating in Austin after the bridge underwent structural changes in the '80s. Austinites reacted with fear, until they learned that the bats consume between 10,000 and 30,000 pounds of insects a night. Today, the bats are one of Austin's most popular tourist attractions, generating nearly 8 million dollars in yearly revenue.

Family outing: Inner Space Caverns
description: A cavern under the state's major highway. Sounds unbelievable, but it is true. The Inner Space Caverns were discovered when construction began on IH-35. Take a tour underground and see the amazing stalagmites and stalactites. In case you were wondering, stalactites must hold on tight because they hang from the top of the cavern and stalagmites just might touch the top. Well, that's one way to remember which is which. Also look for the remains of animals from the Ice Age. You can make your way down via cable car, or to really get a good look, take the walking tour to the bottom. It only takes about an hour.
location: North of Austin in Georgetown
address: 4200 S. IH-35 at: Interstate 35 and Business Route 35
city: Georgetown
state: Texas
zip: 78628-8002
