This project is a culmination of three years of work on the study of Asia for the  K-12 Classroom. I
have participated in the East Asia Institute through Tulsa Community College and Columbia University,
the CTAPS Institute at the University of Hawaii, the Western WashingtonUniversity Institute on
Chinese Immigration, the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program, and the East Asia Field Study Trip
through the Freeman Foundation and Columbia Unversity.

This project is also a work in progress for the students of Byrd Middle School to continue to study and
develop a greater awareness for the countries of Asia and the Pacific Rim. As an educator please take
the time to consider studying the teaching of Asia in the K-12 classroom. It has been a most fulfilling
and enlightening set of experiences for my students and for me.

Special thanks to all those people who made this project a dream and a possibility: Dr. Jessica Stowell, OCTA,
Mr. Garry Nichols, Principal, Byrd Middle School, Mrs. Shaun Ewing, Secretary, Byrd Middle School,

"I envy the Japanese the extreme clearness that everything has in their art.  Never is it tedious
and never does it appear done in too much of a hurry.  Their work is as simple as breathing...."

Vincent Van Gogh, 1888
