Around the World in the 1890's
Photographs from the  World's Transportation Commission
1894-1896
This project  is one of the projects for my Fulbright experience because I wanted my students to see the difference that 100 years makes for a country in the eyes of photographers, historians, and urban planners.

First, you can view the site for the World Transportation Commission by clicking
here.

Second, you can select a
country from the itinerary that William Henry Jackson undertook when he traveled the world photographing these pictures.

Next, you can select
Japan Then you have a choice of 13 different pictures of Japan at the turn of the 20th century. You can also select China, Korea, Hong Kong, Macao. What a difference another century makes!

Learn more about this Commission by clicking
here. Check out the resources for teachers.

Several of my students researched 12 different pictures and then compared them with comparable pictures taken today. The students have compared the pictures and made comments about the differences as perceived by today's teenagers.

Click on each picture for a comparison with similar photographs taken 100 years later.
