Safety

Regarding this topic, the candidates agree on two main areas:

? LAPD Reform: On the aftermath of the LA Rampart Station scandal, it is not surprising that both candidates agree on structural reforms to the Los Angeles Police Department

? Community base policing: Both Villaraigosa and Becerra include proposal that aim that forging stronger links between police and the community.

There are several policy differences or areas of emphasis between Villaraigosa and Becerra:

? Becerra: Unlike Villaraigosa, he includes proposals to enhance technology use by the LAPD (databases of common criminals), and increase LAPD training and recruitment (conflict resolution courses for police and offers scholarships to students interested in becoming police officers).

? Villaraigosa: Unlike Becerra, he focuses on crime prevention programs (at risk kids), increasing criminal penalties (in particular to hate crimes), and restricting the manufacturing, sale and possession of firearms

Assuming I would be able to vote, this research would?ve helped tremendously in shaping my vote. But since I can not vote, I will not reveal my voting decision. I hope this exercise can help the Latino voter identify the candidate who best reflects his/her political priorities and vision. Regardless, both Villaraigosa and Becerra are outstanding Latino political leaders who deserve our support and who I do not doubt will do their best to empower the Latino Community through their own particular platform and political strategy.
