I found some important similarities and differences between the two candidates regarding the two most important campaign topics: Education and Police Reform.

Education

The candidates seem to agree on 4 general areas:

? City Hall-LAUSD collaboration: Both candidates have proposals to increase collaboration between City Hall and LAUSD in the processes of building new schools. A small difference is that Villaraigosa plans to build at least 100 schools while Becerra did not establish a number.
? Neighborhood Schools: Both candidates plant to make schools the center of community development by providing more before/after school activities and community programs.
? Charter Schools: Both candidates support the formation of more Charter Schools
? Parent Involvement: Both candidates support the development of ?family programs? in schools in order to increase parent participation

There are several policy differences or areas of emphasis between Villaraigosa and Becerra:

? Becerra: Unlike Villaraigosa, he includes proposals for incrementing LAPD-LAUSD relations, increasing civic education in school curriculums, creating family literacy programs, expanding extra curriculum activities, developing events promoting higher education, building private sector-school-parent collaboration and promoting programs that encourage teachers to live in the neighborhoods in which they teach.
? Villaraigosa: Unlike Becerra, he includes proposals for improving school grounds and facilities, emulating the best practices of magnet schools and decreasing the size of school districts.
