| I put on my wetsuit, made some peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches, put the kayak in the car and was gone. I put in at Hwy 96 and headed south. Within seconds I spotted what I thought was a deer. Just around a bend or two I saw it again. Only it wasn't alone and it wasn't a deer. Wild Boar, ugly pigs! There were at least three adults and eight young'uns. I watched them from the safety of my boat and listened to their grunts as they trampled the underbrush and then turned away from the river's edge and were gone. |

| It wasn't long before I noticed the first difference this southern section had over the others. Boaters! There weren't quite as many trees in the water, the day was warming up and it was duck season. So the boaters were out. The first one was filled with teenage boys who were towing the second one back, an elderly couple fishing. They smiled, waved, told me I was sexy and kept going. So did I, keep going that is. | |||||||||||||||||
| The next boat was filled with morons who hid their rifles and beer in the bottom of the boat as I passed by. They smiled and waved politely but as soon as I was around the bend the shots rang out. I got away from them as fast as possible. I will say that not all the boaters were hideous. Some of them showed their upbringing. | |||||||||||||||||
| There were several side creeks and inlets which I couldn't help but explore. "They'd make wonderful campsites", I told myself. "Another day", I answered. One inlet was the size of a small pound and T'd off after a short distance. On one end I found an old homestead or bridge maybe. I could tell it had been used recently by someone, probably hunters. There was the most fascinating broom made out of palmetto leaves and a stick wrapped in electrical tape. It was a simple item but somehow impressed me just the same. |
