The Oceanis
The OCEANIS is a 25m(82ft) traditionally built, two masted wooden motor sailing
vessel with twelve double cabins, six showers and toilets, spacious saloon and plenty of
deck space. It is equipped with T.V., Video, stereo, slide projector, binoculars,
underwater video camera, masks and snorkels, identification field guides.
The owner of the boat is an experienced researcher-marine biologist a Mediterranean Monk
Seal expert.
If you choose to travel with us here are some of the special care and attention you will
encounter.
The friendly crew is something unique we think and all who have traveled with us at
anytime know this.
Always special care and attention is given and this can be seen in the
ways of:
One of the crew members in constant attention at any time passengers are
swimming.
Full identification of wildlife, birds, fish, seals and dolphins are
explicitly described by qualified and trained marine biologist (snorkels and binoculars
provided).Wide choice of wildlife identification guide books available .
Food always freshly cooked in front of passengers and served in a friendly
and comfortable way (no plastic plates or forks and we do not try to get away with serving
sandwiches to our passengers). Vegetarians are always catered for.
All efforts made to get passengers back in time for local buses.
In bad weather conditions and in case we have to go to another port a private bus will
always take our passengers back to Skopelos.
Cabins are available if young children babies, elderly, sick or just tired
passengers require them (the only boat with cabins).
Passengers are always escorted and guided on every trip e.g. Agios Ioannis
and Alonissos, walks on deserted islands.
Full personal liability insurance is covering all our passengers always.
This may not be the case with many other boats leaving Skopelos harbor.
Many times passengers are given choices of next destinations (majority decisions rule).
All these points we have made are readily available on a traditional Greek
boat built in Samos in 1958 and altered to its present state in 1988.
Limited number of people.
It is constantly realized that people who take one trip with the Oceanis often return to
take another and another , and year after year people return to take trips with us also.

YOUR HOLIDAY CRUISING BOAT IN SKOPELOS, SKIATHOS, ALONNISOS
Within a short while of setting foot on
the "Oceanis", you realise that the boat has its own magic, captivating and
charming all who step aboard.
Whether its a short trip around Skopelos, the fun of the Squid fishing evening, or the
weekend two day trip to the National Marine Park, you soon find something in common with
your companions, be they Danish, Swedish, German, Italian, British or Greek. The language
may be at times a little tortured, but the smiles communicate everything.
Greek hospitality, makes everyone equal as the boat carries them through the enchanting
Aegean and the beautiful scenery of the Sporades. Swimming in the warm azure waters of
quiet secluded bays, sun bathing on the spacious deck, or sheltering from the sun under the
awnings, cooled by a refreshing sea breeze. Listening to soft and gentle music, or stories
of the past, of monasteries and ancient, pirates and kings.
Eat simple and good Greek food, prepared fresh on board, and whether your tastes are for
wine or water, you have your choice of refreshments.
Share the knowledge, and stories of conservation and the Eco- system, related by Vassilis,
a qualified Marine Biologist, who hosts and guides each trip.
If you are especially favoured, the boat may be joined by dolphins, either just passing by
and popping out of the water to get a better view, or swimming and playing in the bow wave
of the boat.
SKOPELOS WEEKLY SCHEDULE
TWO DAY ECOLOGICAL TRIP
If you intend to visit
the Northern Sporades islands (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos) this year, do not miss the
chance to take part in this exciting and exclusive trip.
Spending a night on board the Oceanis in
one of our comfortable cabins is a treat many people every year thoroughly enjoy. The
cruise is a wonderful memorable journey around unspoiled deserted Aegean islands.
Leaving Skopelos in the morning the Oceanis cruises towards the National Marine Park of
Alonnisos where it is possible to see monk seals, dolphins and many species of birds,
fishes and plant life. During our voyage, information will be given about the areas we are
going to visit (cultural, historical as well as archaeological), the reasons for the
establishment of the Marine Park and the efforts made for the study and protection of its
wildlife. Explanation of how to use the wildlife identification guides and underwater
video equipment.
Kira Panagia and Psathoura are just two of the lazy lonely islands we visit.
On Kira Panagia we call at the Monastery where the monks once used to make cheeses, wines
and olive oil and all the equipment, kitchens and methods can still be clearly seen.
Observation of the wildlife on the island, bird-watching, identification of plants etc. On
leaving the Monastery, a relaxing swim is usually taken by most, before a B.B.Q lunch is
served and after which some enjoy an afternoon siesta. Sunbathing, snorkelling, underwater
video.
The boat anchors for the night in the magnificent gulf of Planitis. Video and slides are
shown on the biology, ecology of the monk seal which is the most endangered species in
Europe followed by discussion on the efforts made for their study and protection .
Planitis is the perfect name for this gulf which will be realised by all as after your
evening meal you leave the lounge area of the boat and go on the top deck to be amazed at
the sight of a night sky completely full of bright shining stars, an extremely romantic
sight indeed.
The following day starts with breakfast and later a cruise to Psathura where it is
possible to walk to the light house, taking in beautiful views of the sea and wildlife or
if it is desired just relaxing on the magnificent sandy beach or on the boat swimming,
sunbathing or snorkelling.
After enjoying lunch we cruise to the gulf of Agios Petros, where a beautiful unspoiled
beach is always greatly enjoyed. Observation of a winter monk seal shelter, located next
to the beach.
Later in the evening dinner is served as we cruise back to Skopelos. During our voyage we
will watch for sights of dolphins. On arrival in Skopelos the crews work becomes very hard
as they try to get the very reluctant passengers to leave the Oceanis.
One Day Trip to Alonissos
Leaving Skopelos in the morning the
Oceanis makes its way to the port of Alonissos. A bus carries the passengers up the hill
to the old town built on the hilltop for protection against pirates.
Walk round the picturesque old town, now a popular home for artists.
Follow the old track back down the hillside, for centuries the only way to the harbour for
the townspeople.
Sail along the south coast of the island, to the nice beach at Georgi Yialo for a swim
before lunch.
Then on to a large and colourful sea cave, where you can swim from the boat into the cave.
On the way back to Skopelos watch a video about the Monk Seals.
One Day Round Skopelos Trip
Leaving in the morning visiting beautiful beaches and places around Skopelos chosen
as the best for the weather that day.
Visit the Monastery of Agios Ioannis, with its 93 steps, above a Beautiful beach and with
a magnificent view.
Stop at the beach of Hovolo for a swim and to have lunch, with plenty of time for
swimming, sunbathing and snorkelling.
Jump from the boat into the crystal clear waters of Limnonari or laze on its sandy beach,
before heading home tired but happy.
Sunset and Squid Fishing
Sailing early in the afternoon from Agnontas port, a mixture of romance, fun and
party.
Have a last swim of the day in a sheltered gulf.
Head smoothly out to sea, and five minutes before the sun goes down, switch off the
engines, and enjoy the peaceful Aegean sunset over and some wine.
Move on to the fishing grounds, where sharing lines between two or three people, you are
initiated into the delights of squid fishing.
If you've never seen a beautiful girl with a live squid on the end of a line then........
After this, a meal of fried squid, a drink or two, some nice music, the Aegean night lit
by a thousand stars.... and later back to Skopelos port. |
