78 paddlers took to the water off Noosa at the weekend to compete in the first race of the AOCRA Grand Prix Southern Zone OC1/OC2 series.
Talk turned to the various designs of canoes, available for racing, now registered in Australia that lined the Noosa beach.
After a slow start, that involved canoes being weighed, official numbers being issued for the season, paddler registrations and a bit of general chaos, the first race around Noosa headland was underway.
33 Paddlers set out paddling into a tender Southerly, even though the forecast was for a strong wind warning, heading for around Noosa Headland and back. A distance of 12 klm.
For many of the paddlers, this was their first race on an OC1 or OC2, so hulis were very prevalent. The pack headed out, men and women together, being led by Mr. Chris Maynard of Outrigger Australia .He was chased down by Robert Pomie, who won the Open Men with Anthony Hartley Third.
A good contingent of female paddlers was there as well including many first timers completing the course successfully. The Senior Master women were very competitive with Liz Harvey battling it out all the way with Linda Whitehurst formerly of Santa Barbara and now an Aussi
Resident. Despite Linda's huli on the start line she still battled with Liz to take 2nd place unofficially in the Long course.
OC2 s are becoming very popular with Gordon Jeffery (the legend) and Helen Wagner showing how it is done! Tracey Horan and Erica Hamp trying to chase them down and new skipper Sandy Cooper trialling her new pink OC2 for the first time.
The short course turned out to be a great running course for novices. 6klms: Start at the groyne, race to the pass, out to the North and run the bumps back to the boy! What fun!
Congratulations to our first timers! Jenny Johnson Tweed Coast Outriggers winning the Short Course 50 -54 yrs.
Senior Master Women OC2: Pam Prescott/ Jill Duffield: Brisbane Outriggers
Richard Cetinich: Master Men Short Course Tweed Coast Outriggers
The new Anderson OC2 plug was launched for the first time and raced in the Short course by Louise McMaster and Peter Anderson. Winners of the Mixed OC2 Senior Master Short Course.
A wonderful turn-up by the juniors, who waited all morning for their events.
