Language Learning, Translation and Interpreting, Books and Audio at Language Institute of New Zealand (LIONZ)
The institute was initially founded by Director Miriam O'Connor in Mount Eden, Auckland in early 1990. Then called the Eden Language Studio, the institute provided interpreting, translation, language teaching and publishing.
In April 2003, the name LIONZ (Language Institute of New Zealand) was adopted, to reflect the wider range of services now provided and the expansion from an Auckland suburban business to a national and international provider.
Director Miriam O'Connor is a fluent French and Mandarin speaker and a qualified Interpreter (NAATI and AUT Certificate of Consecutive Interpreting). She has experience in Technical, Court, Academic and Commercial translation. Her teaching experience was gained at universities in New Zealand and Asia, and she recently gained accreditation as Teaching in Higher Education from the British-based Staff Educational Development Association (SEDA).
Miriam O'Connor is a member of the NZFGW and the Alliance Francaise, and is employed as the Administrator of the Chinese New Settlers Services Trust in Auckland, New Zealand.
Recent interpreting has included meetings between New Zealand schools and their overseas agents, between Chinese settlers and secondary schools and government departments, and for French and Italian drivers at the recent Rallye New Zealand. Translation assignments have included a client language school's website translated into German by LIONZ and correspondence with overseas agents.
In 2003 LIONZ conducted successful European marketing activities for four Auckland institutions and has acted as educational consultants for International Students from China, Taiwan and Japan. Also in the educational field, a course designed by LIONZ has just been recognised by NZQA at Level 4.
