Ciudad Acuña
Labour Weekend 2000....to many peoples amazement Dave, Adam and I spent a long week exploring 'La Frontera' - The border between Mexico and Texas. Specifically we visited the two US cities of Del Rio and Eagle Pass, and their two larger Mexican partners of Ciudad Acuña and Piedras Negras. We also managed to get a good look around a few other places such as Lake Amistad (which is half US, half Mexican) and Brackettville, where they shot the 1960 movie 'The Alamo' starring John Wayne. It was a pretty interesting weekend full of new sights, good food and cheap beer. I was also very hot - but you get that I guess.... - Here are some photos from around Ciudad Acuña. You can see the photos of Del Rio by clicking here.
This is just across the border....Welcome to Coahuila, Land of Friendship. If Pearl Jam ever put out a Spanish album, they will have to call it 'Salida'.
This is a statue that depicts the an eagle with a serpent in its claws, perched upon a cactus. This symbolism is also present on the Mexican flag - apparently dating back from the 1300's when the Aztecs arrived in Tenochtitlan (modern Mexico City) and found this symbol on their arrival. Sorry if I just educated you without asking first - that was a little bit sneaky.
Adam and I watch Dave shoot off four photos of us with my camera.....bad motor drive. They basically were the same except for the truck moving in the distance, so I decided to spare everyone the pain.
This was the bar we relaxed in while we waited for the evil heat to subside. Very nice, and also very cheap beer - we were actually drinking inside, but decided escape before things got messy - it was only early....
They had one a pretty good job of making this place look nice. They even painted hot women onto the boarded up windows...I wish I could have seen drunk people climb up to meet her...as long as it wasn't me that is.
¿Para un chico bonito?
'Polly want a Cerveza'
This is the square in town. One of the biggest contrasts between the US and Mexican cities, were that the Mexican cities seemed to have nice parks and public areas where the US cities were much like every other US cities with Wal Mart and McDonalds. The people were pretty friendly in both places though.
