A Champion is Crowned
Abington, MA 09/04/02

After far too long to even explain what happened and who ended up where, the East Grenich Gremlins found themselves Champions of the SSLI for the 2000 season.

The quick version of the series (since I know you're really interested) the Tallywackers took a commanding 2-0 lead in the series defeating both Pedro Martinez and Chan Ho Park in games one and two.

Things were looking bleak for the Gremlins as they headed home for two games. Game three saw Tom Glavine throw a gem and was able to put the Gremlins on the board and put the series at 2-1. Game four saw Pedro take the hill for the second time, and things started out like any other Pedro game (no runs thru 3). But then the wheels came off as Pedro allowed two homers in the fourth putting the Tallywackers up 3-1. After the 2nd homer Pedro beaned the next hitter and was ejected from the game. But by some miracle Jose Jimenez came on in emergency relief and threw four shut-out inings before handing things off to Bobby Howry in the 8th. During that time the Gremlins took the lead and evened the series up at 2 games each.

Game five saw the Gremlin bats come to life a bit, and they had to with the ever-shaky Chan Ho Park on the hill. Led by homers from David Justice (2-run) and Gary Sheffield (3-run) the Gremmlins took the game 6-5 and now lead the series 3-2.

Tom Glavine took the hill for game six, and with the winless Pedro staring down the barrel at the Tallywackers for a potential game seven, the Gremlins were in the Drivers seat. Thru two innings the Gremlins lead 2-1, with both teams missing big opportunities to score. Then in the 3rd the Gremlins busted it open and never looked back as they scored six times (3 after an error by the normally sure handed Scott Rolen that would have been the 3rd out).

The two teams exchanged two-spots in the B5 and T6 before the Gremlins put it out of reach with seven more in the 8th. The Tallywackers put up a fight in the ninth, scoring three, but it was much too little too late as the Gremlins ran away with the game 17-8 and the series 4-2.

SSLI Back After Long Hiatus
Braintree, MA 01/09/02

It's simply been too long since our last update to tell you everything that has happened since the last time we joined you. This time we'll let you take a look at the records and stats to see how things are going.

Next meeting either 1/16 or 1/17.

Triumphant Return for Porcupines   Tallywackers Stumble
South Boston, MA 12/06/01

  • For the first time in weeks the entire SSLI met to continue the season. It seems the time off did the Porcupines some good, as they took their 6-10 record and ran off a 5-2 spot on the night to close within one game of .500 on the season.

  • In a similar but opposite turn of events, the Tallywackers offense went ont he snide and they finished the night to the tune of 2-4, and until the last game of the night the Tallywackers had only scored a total of 11 runs in 5 games. But a 15-9 win in the night's finally salvaged some pride for the team.

  • The Gremlins showed some signs of pulling out of their four week long funk, going 2-3, but more encouraging was the fact that for the first time in 19 games, someone other than Pedro Martinez recorded a win (Tom Glavine).

  • Chatanooga split for the evening going 2-2, keeping .500 out of reach for at least another week.

    Standings Shift - Porcupines MIA
    Abington, MA 11/30/01

  • It's been a while since we last updated you on the status of the SSLI. Though too many games have been played to go over each one, there is plenty of drama to unfold for you.

First and foremost, the Palucaville Screaming Porcupines are still missing in action. Various trasportation problems is the official word for their front office, but we think there is more to this story than is being told.

  • The other major bit of new is the absolute collapse of the East Grenich Gremlins. Last update the Gremlins were atop the standings at 13-5, but dismal pitching and even worse hitting has them in second place behind the Tallywackers at 16-14. The only ray of light during this whole mess for the Gremlins has been the pitching of Pedro Martinez, if not for him, the folks from East Grenich would be below .500.

  • With the Gremlins plummet, the Tallywackers have done the opposite, surging into first with a 23-17 record. As you can see the Tallywackers have had no trouble getting games in, almost to a fault, as they will have much sitting around to do towards the end of the season.

  • Last, but not least, Chatanooga. The Cookies have made no major waves as they continue to try and get to the .500 mark. Several times they have been close, only to go on a short losing streak to dash away any hopes and dreams of mediocrity.

  • All teams are expected in attendance this Thursday (12/6) for the first time in over a month, we will update you on everything as it happens.
