In the year of 1969, at the peak of the Black Power Movement, African Americans were fighting for their rights, claiming their culture and displaying their afrocentricity. On April 4, the somber first anniversary of the murder of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., twelve dynamic women displayed their committment to the cause. Recruited to the cause by the fellowmen of Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship Incorporated to serve as their sister organization, our beloved founding sisters, proud, innovative, and determined, stepped out on faith at Winston-Salem State University to establish Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowship Incorporated.

These bold, Afrocentric sisters "dared to be different", challenging the standard normality of pledging a "Greek lettered sorority", went against the odds and established a unique Social Fellowship. They ignited a flame that would influence thousands of other women across the country to follow in their footsteps. Over the next three decades, their pioneering spirit continues to burn in the hearts of many sisters, transcending the boundaries of geography, social class, complexion, and religious affiliation.

Today, SWING is a unique, non-profit organization with over 50 active graduate and undergraduate chapters throughout the USA and a committment to affecting social change, consciously uplifting women and being on the front line in regards to community involvement. We realize that as conscious African American Women, we are an integral part of our communities. We accept our responsibility as Sisters With Interest Never Gone.

Way Way Way Black in 1969
12 Women got together and learned from Groove Phi Groove they spread the word that
Black was beautiful
While others were acting like a bunch of Coons
on
April 4th a year before
Martin Luther King's life came up short

The next year over
Swing marked that date
so that we would not forget
from where we came

Now a lot of folks are scared
to do the same
so when they hear our name
all they do is express their
self hate
Deep Deep down inside of their brains
They know
Swing is about some powerful change that's why they work with us on the low
to get to where it is that they need to go. We are never pressed and never gassed
The Tree that bears the wrong fruit it too shall pass
Self Love and self knowledge is what we stress and last but not least black empowerment
So either move forward or go sit in the back
and watch a Swing do it to def and do it with class.
