What do you think happens when people die?

First, here's some
humor. Then read on.
"I think dying is probably just like losing consciousness. We are alive and conscious one second, then dead and unconscious the next. I try not to dwell on it too much because it really does upset me. I heard somewhere that the human brain cannot conceptualize its own finiteness." -- Myrea 6/17/05

"I think of a few possibilities, but I don't think I will be myself reincarnated or see others that have died: 1) most likely sleep without dreams ; 2) maybe we have a soul and the energy that is our soul rejoins with other energies. I think you have to determine if you believe that there is something inhabiting your body beyond the biology of your brain. Fun to think about but in my world I LIKE not knowing. I LIKE having there be possibilities and mystery.
The ONLY thing that worries me about death is the sadness that my death would cause others." --

"The process of death is a chemical one in which the body breaks down. It begins as the systems that keep us alive shut down- like a car motor dying, so then it stops running altogether. The electrical impulses that fire in the nervous system cease to fire and then we are dead.

After the process of dying itself, the body begins to decompose. Cell by cell the body disentigrates into its natural broken forms of carbon, water, etc- the basic building blocks of life are basically broken down. This is what happens if a body is left naturally to decompose. Of course, if burial or cremation happen, then this process is altered.

During the process of dying, prior to all systems being shut down, I do think that some people may experience out of body experiences or the like due to the firing of neurons and the like still active in the brain- as happens while dreaming." --

"Myself, I think death would be like going under anasthetic (sp?). One minute you know, the next you don't."  --mybabybugs 6/16/05

I rot in the ground and become food for other creatures, or if my body is given to science parts of me remain in a lab somewhere and BTW I am very happy with this situation I dont believe in a soul and I cant understand people that do.

I believe that only the person's body dies. Their spirit moves on to a new realm. Depending on the type of life the person led, that will determine if their spirit is allowed to continue on a new journey (still sorting out what I believe this journey is) or die completely. I do not believe in heaven or hell. -

You cease to exist as a conscious being. Your body decays and the elements go back into the universe.

They are dead. No heaven. No hell. The fact that they have lived will affect the world ever after, and through that in a way they will live forever as long as earth exisits. Or if humans discover how to leave the planet for others, other places as well. Ripples in a pond give us immortality.

I can't answer that for sure, but I tend to think that when we die, the lights just go out. I can't get my mind around the thought of people sitting around heaven day in and day out for all eternity just twiddling their thumbs. The thought of death used to scare me, but it doesn't anymore. When you can't feel anything and you are unaware of your surroundings, then you are in a true state of peace.

Your physical body dies, and as your brain/consciousness is part of that, you no longer exist. If we go on, it's only in the DNA that we pass to our progeny, and in the memories of those we loved. I don't have any reason to speculate otherwise. LoreleiG 6/8/03

Don't know...and neither do you!

Once a persons body dies, the only part that lives on are his or her genes and memories people have.
squshys_mom 6/13/03

They die, what else could possibly happen? I hear hair and fingernails continue to grow but that's about it.
Cindi_Doll 6/17/03

I think they cease to exist in any coherent form. I don't believe in any afterlife. So when a person dies, what they were is gone. They only live on in memories, in genes they pass on, in the ways they affected others.
