Partner Abuse Screening

Screening and a simple tool

"Published literature...provides guidance for how effective screening should take place, demonstrating the importance of conducting inquiries in private settings and using straightforward, non-judgmental questions, preferably asked verbally by a health care practitioner."
(Preventing Domestic Violence, 2001)

Griffin and Koss (2001) believe that nurses could implement a level of consistency in screening patients for partner violence.

One of the screening tools currently being utilized:

    "HITS:

  • How often has your partner physically Hurt you?
  • How often has your partner Insulted you?
  • How often has your partner Threatened you?
  • How often has your partner Screamed at you?

Do you feel safe in your current relationship?
Is there a partner from a previous relationship who is making you feel unsafe now?
Have you been hit, kicked, punched or otherwise hurt by someone within the past year? If so, by whom?"
(Sherin et al, 1998 and Gottula, 1998)

"The mnemonic "RADAR" describes measures to help identify and manage patients who are victims of partner abuse:
  • R = Remember to ask
  • A = Ask directly
  • D = Document findings
  • A = Assess safety
  • R = Review options"
    (Alpert & Albright, 2000)
