Types of care

In Canada, women have a choice of birthplaces. They can choose to have their babies at home, in hospital or a combination of home and hospital: Hospitals have different settings.
Hospital settings
  • Labour, delivery, recovery and postpartum: This is a multi transfer system where the labouring woman is moved from room to room during the different phases of labour and may have different caregivers in the different phases of labour. Most often after birth, the baby is cared for in the nursery.
  • Single room maternity care or family centered care: In this setting all the care is provided in the same room and the baby stays with the parents at all times. Any care required by the mother and baby are provided by the bedside. The baby is separated from the parents only if he/she is ill and requires care in a special care nursery. This care is also a compromise between home birthing care and the traditional hospital care and values the principals of family centered care. [Page 3]
    Home setting
  • In this setting the care is provided by the midwife in the womans' home. The woman and her family are assessed and if they are considered to be low risk, preparations are made for delivery at home. If any complications occur from the normal progress of labour the woman is transferred to hospital and her care is completed. For more information visit, [www.cmbc.bc.ca]
  • Combination hospital and home care. In this setting the woman is cared for by the midwife throughout her pregnancy. When in labour ,the woman is assessed in her home by the midwife and when in active labour is admitted to hospital and the midwife continues her care until the baby is delivered. If the mother and baby are not discharged home after delivery, the post partum care is continued by hospital nurses.
