aaa History
let’s take a trip down memory lane shall we? For starters in the 15th century, the island of Penang was referred as (pronounced Binlang Yu) which means ….in navigational drawings used by Admiral Zheng He of Ming-dynasty China in his expeditions to the South Seas. Well, as you can imagine, right down to the 16th century, it was even called Pulau Pinang. A little similar to the name now doesn’t it? Here we are at the 21st century, it is widely known as “Pulau Pinang” now, which literally means the island of the areca nut palm. Fascinating really for someone like me who lacks quite a bit on our Malaysia’s historical front.
