BESM: Armitage III -- D'Anclaude and Dr. Asakura

Rene D'Anclaude

Total Character Points: 50
Total Skill Points: 180

There were actually two Rene D’Anclaudes encountered by Ross and Armitage during their search for the killer of the Thirds and Armitage’s reason for being. The original Rene D’Anclaude was the partner of Dr. Asakura when Conception began work on improving the Second series of robots, while the second were actually several androids made in his image and created for the task of murder. Both D’Anclaudes were thin and wiry in appearance, with a shock of unkempt blond hair and a near-perpetual sneer on their faces. The game statistics below are for theflesh-and-blood D'Anclaude. Statistics for the Assassinroid can be found in the section on  "Androids and Robots."

Rene D’Anclaude and the Assassinroid were identical in appearance, but the original D’Anclaude was a human with no known cybernetic enhancements, made of flesh, blood, and bone. The Assassinroid was a robot, with greatly enhanced strength and speed and a programmed set of combat skills the equal of any human. It had organic flesh and organs, but underneath it was metal, plastics, and circuits. The skills possessed by the two differed as well. The original D’Anclaude was extremely clever and a technical genius, with some combat training but mainly self-taught. He relied on surprise and very short ranges to shoot his victims, and used the people of Mars as a weapon as well. The Assassinroid was clever as well, but was programmed only for killing and knew how to do it well. One thing they had in common, however, was their mental state: both D’Anclaudes were insane.

As an agent of the government, albeit a secret one, D’Anclaude had access to a wide variety of equipment and support. This included the equipment needed to break in on the standard television airwaves and pirate his broadcasts to the entire city of St. Lowell, as well as the Second bodyguards he had at the spaceport and the care he received at Shenora Hospital. The attempts by Lt. Randolph’s superiors to shut down the investigation, especially those made after the real D’Anclaude was hurt and the government knew an Assassinroid would finish the job, fall under the category of support as well. Finally, there were the mecha used by the Assassinroid in the main memory and the Hospital, both likely provided by the government to put a stop to the problems Armitage and Ross were causing. The D’Anclaudes had the secret might of the government of Mars on their side, and Armitage and Ross had only their friends and Dr. Asakura. Seen in this light, it is amazing that the D’Anclaudes were defeated, and even more amazing that both Armitage and Ross survived.

Dr. Asakura

Total Character Points: 41
Total Skill Points: 90

An older man, Dr. Asakura (his first name was never revealed) had a face that wore the marks of many stressful years and a full head of grey hair. He was a robotics genius and pioneer, responsible for innumerable advances in his field. A long-time employee of the Conception Company, Dr. Asakura and his team, including colleague Rene D’Anclaude, went to work trying to improve and update the Second line of robots. Their first finished product were intended for use as weapons. These Assassinroids, as they were called, had uncontrollable violent tendencies, and Asakura washed his hands of the project, swearing off the production of robotic weaponry.

The final Assassinroid created was the bridge between those robots and an entirely new type- the Thirds. Unlike the others, this last Assassinroid was not made in Rene D’Anclaude’s image. Instead, she was created as a little girl. As nearly everything but her brain was organic, this girl was able to grow and mature just as a human child would, and Asakura treated her as his daughter--Naomi Armitage. Asakura’s work on the Thirds progressed and several were produced, each a female and, like Armitage, with a functioning womb and the ability to bear children, which was one of the basic requirements set by Dr. Asakura for his Thirds, to help increase the population of Mars faster.

His final attempt produced a young boy, Julian Moore, and then the project was halted. Asakura was subjected to a brainwashing as his work had made him aware of too many state secrets, and he went into a forced retirement in the domed laboratory on Dunwich Hill, a place not shown on any public map. He worked there for years afterward, assisted only by Wilbur D’Anclaude, an Assassinroid he had reprogrammed.

Dr. Asakura’s intended role focus for the new type of robots he began working was to complete of the terra-formation of Mars. Pushing the envelope of robotics, he produced what he called Alives, a type of robot resembling a walking melting tree trunk that was essentially a whole new life form, not limited to plant or animal shape as advanced robots had been until then. These Alives were programmed as expert gardeners and botanists, ready-made to fill the surface of Mars with water and plant life.

When Armitage arrived at Dunwich Hill, she found Asakura suffering memory problems resulting from his brainwashing and unable to recognize her. Eventually, however, he did so as the military closed in on the dome. To save her life, Asakura shocked her into unconsciousness, as she refused to leave. He repaired her and added a few final adjustments such as wings and lasers, then sent her off with Ross, but chose to remain behind in the dome when she and Ross left. He died when the dome was bombed by the military, happily watching his Alives work in his final moments with his loyal assistant Wilbur at his side.
