Quotes from Campbell-McBrides Book

What can damage gut flora?

We have all taken antibiotics. It is one of the most commonly prescribed medications in our modern world... farm animals and poultry are routninely given antibiotics so all the products we get from them (meat eggs milk) will provide us with a constant supply of antibiotics and antibiotic resisitant bacteria, which these animals develop in their bodies and all the toxins which these bacteria produce. (pg 31)

Farmed fish, like salmon, have antibiotics routinely added to their tanks. A lot of fruit and vegetables are sprayed with antibiotics to control disease. (pg 31))

And as the production of antibiotics grew .... to tens of thousands of tons a year in the 1990's so grew the evidence and worried research into the harmful effects of this group of drugs on human health. (pg 31)

Research shows that: Antibiotics have a devastating effect on beneficial bacteria in the human body, not only in the gut but in other organs and tissues. (pg31))

Antibiotics change benign bacteria, viruses and fungi into pathogens giving them the ability to invade tissues and cause disease. )

Antibotics change bacteria making it resistant to antibiotics so the industry has to work on more and more powerful new antibiotics to attack these new changed bacteria. A good example is tuberculosis ... (which is) resistant to all existing antibiotics. (pg 32))

Antibiotics have a direct damaging effect on the immune system, making us more vulnerable to infections. (pg 32))

(antibiotics include - the penecillins, tetracyclines, aminoglyosides, anti fungal antibiotics ) (pg 32) )

Combinations of antibiotics have stronger damaging effects on the gut flora than single drugs. (pg 33) )

Most drugs particularly prescribed for long periods of time or permanently have a detrimental effect on gut flora. (pg 33) )

These include pain killers, steroid drugs, contraceptive pills ... and other drugs - sleeping pills, heartburn pills, neuroleptics, cholinolytic drugs, cytotoxic drugs ... cause different damage to the gut flora, digestive system, and immune system. (pg 34) )

What other factors can have an effect on the gut flora? diet, diseases, stress, other factors such as old age, alcoholism, pollution, toxic substances, seasonal factors, radiation, (even) extreme climates all have a profound effect on our friendly bacteria. (pg 36) )

Bottle fed babies develop completely different gut flora to the breast feed babies. Breast feeding is essential for appropriate population of baby gut with balanced healthy gut flora. (pg 35) )

pg 36
