Katunggan Trees & Tamilok Worms
11 Sept 2005

Many trees in the Katunggan (Mangroves) grow roots above ground.
Ano na nga ba ang function ng roots above ground? Why did they evolve?
Nasa CR yata ako nong ni-lecture yun eh, hehe... :)

Trees in the Katunggan (Mangroves) can be a source of firewood.
This is how ULING (charcoal) is made...
Some plants from the Katunggan are medicinal or poisonous.

The wild NIPA used for roofing is a mangrove tree. Where there are many
Nipa trees, such area in the mangroves is sometimes called Nipahan. Where
there are many Bakhaw trees, the area is often referred as BAKHAWAN.

Like all living matter, trees in the Katunggan (Mangroves)
have lifespan too. How many years? Depending on type of tree...

Dead woods become shelter & food for some
worm-like creatures. See anything squirmy yet?
On left is a calcium-based "cocoon" of the Tamilok.

We saw two types of worm-like creatures.
Notice the calcium-based "cocoons".

Two types of "worms"...

The grayish type with a "head" is the TAMILOK.

more TAMILOKs!!

Several Tamilok(s) in one small/short dead branch.

Hmm... someone's hand wants to touch... Why? What for?

Why? What for?

Ah... That's why...

Slimy but edible!! A li'l salty yet tasty!! Parang oyster lang daw in your tongue?
Mangroves guru Dr JH Primavera didn't have to say "cheez" for this portrait shot....

And what else can one orally consume from
the Katunggan (Mangroves) ?
IMBAO !!
A world free of pollution & whose environment's YIN
is in constant equilibrium with its YANG... assures
abundance of food for the planet's growing population?
Bantay-Katunggan intends to restore some balance...

Ito po ang mga kasapi ng BANTAY-KATUNGGAN,
who are aware that the collapse of the prawn industry
was due to the white-spot virus which still has no
cure. The rest of Far East Asia (the Philippines still
excluded, thank God) has bird-flu in their chicken farms.
The salmon farms in Norway also have a disease!

This photo is in memory of PAZ

Ito po ang mga kasapi ng BANTAY-KATUNGGAN who believe
that the Katunggan (Mangroves) is a balancer of nature...
Why are MUD CRABS called as such? Coz they thrive in MANGROVE MUD.
Ask Filipinos of two generations ago who have lived near rivers not too
far from the sea: They literally just handpicked large prawns from katunggans!!
