Chapter 35
Mackenzie rolled her head to the side and groaned as she came out of consciousness. The shooting pain was still in the back of her head. She tried to move her hand to rub the spot but was shocked to find her arms and legs tied to the chair. She slowly opened her eyes trying to remember what had happened the night before. Light flooded in her eyes before blinked repeatedly trying to adjust her eyes. The only thing she remembered was standing in front of her closet and being hit by something in the back of her head, she could only guess the rest. She licked her dry lips and immediately tasted the blood on them. She opened her eyes although she was very dizzy and looked around. She immediately noticed that she was in some kind of basement, how she got there she didn't know. Looking around even harder she saw that everything in the basement was covered with different bed sheets as if no one had been there in a long time. Then it hit her. Although she had not been there for many years, Mackenzie knew exactly where she was. She tried to pull her hands free from the ropes but it was no good. If she only had her phone she would call Justin and he could get here in no time. A picture of Sam flashed through her head and she suddenly remembered everything that happened before she went unconscious. She had told Justin to leave her alone, had he even known she was gone? What if they thought she was still in her room? All these thoughts and more flooded her mind when she heard a loud bang from upstairs. Some one was coming. If she was where she thought she was then there should be a phone inside the electrical box, which was right along side the wall. She could see the box from where she was sitting and all she had to do was get to it. She shuffled in her chair trying to inch forward but it merely toppled over causing Mackenzie to land on her side still tied to the chair. "Damnit." she said aloud. Using her feet and her weight she shifted again trying get upright, but instead the chair fell on it back causing Mackenzie's hands to be crush underneath her. She nearly screamed in pain but she knew that Sam would hear her and come down. Using her hands she crawled over to the wall. Now, she was lying on the ground tied to a chair with her head facing the ceiling, how was she supposed to reach the phone. She looked around for something sharp, anything, but it was no use. There was another sound from above and Mackenzie knew she had to hurry. She looked around and saw a small vent that was coming from the carpet. Mackenzie quickly crawled over to it and picked the covering out of the floor. Turning it over she used the semi-sharp vents to cut through the ropes that secured her hands together. She was almost through when her hands slipped and cut her wrist deeply. Flinching from the pain, Mackenzie cut through the rope one last time before it was broken. She quickly unraveled the ropes from her wrists and pushed herself and the chair upright. She untied her ankles and stood to open the electrical box hoping the phone inside still worked. "Please...Please work..." she thought to herself as she picked up the phone saying a little prayer that it worked before she pressed it to her ear. "YES!" the phone worked. She quickly dialed Justin's number and held the phone up again after hearing another noise from upstairs. The phone rang.... rang again.....and rang. "Please pick up...Justin....please...where are you?" There was another loud noise. Someone was definitely coming. "Come on Justin!"
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" The phone slipped from her fingers as the voice rang out from behind her. She knew she had to do something. She wasn't going to sit there while someone tried to kill her. Mackenzie decided right then that she was going to fight back with all she had.
Or die trying.
Justin raced out the door of his hotel room to find Brian and Sean standing there ready to block him from leaving, but before they could Justin ran out screaming Nick's name. "I know where she is." Justin said as he caught up to him.
Nicks faced changed in outrage, "Who told you? I told the guys not too. Justin's it's going to be ok." Nick said but Justin had no idea what he was talking about.
"What?" he said
"Justin, sit down." Nick said as the two sat down in what appeared to be a miniature lobby in the hallway. "The police...they found Sam's car."
"What? Where?" Justin said
"They did a search for her license plate and tracked the car down. It is about two hours north of here in a very small town in Maine. Her clothes, her money...everything is in there, the police have checked it out. The only problem is that neither Mackenzie nor Sam is in it."
"Well then where the hell are they!!?" Justin yelled getting angrier
"Justin, the car...it's...it's parked in front of a warehouse thats been abandoned for years now. Since the town is very small, the police there don't have the equipment to investigate the building...."
"Well, people are going to get there, right?" Justin said
"Justin...the weather, they can't fly there by any means. It's too dangerous..."
"Cars?" he said
"Justin, think about it, if we send them up there now in cars it would take probably over 3 hours in this storm." seeing the look on Justin's face he knew he didn't understand. "Justin if they drive an hour and then the weather starts to clear then they will be driving another two for no reason. If we just wait a little while then the weather will clear. We have helicopters on standby."
"No." Justin said, "I'm not going to wait here while Mackenzie's in some warehouse with a freak trying to hurt her. No way. Either you get me in a damn helicopter or I'm driving there. You have to understand this, Nick. I can't just sit and do nothing."
"Justin, it's not safe to fly." Nick said calmly.
"Then give us the keys." JC said from behind them. The pair turned around to see JC, Joey, Chris, Lance and Wade all standing with determined looks on their faces.
Nick gave them one last look before sighing, "I'll go tell everyone we are leaving under one condition." Everyone looked at him. "You guys, especially YOU, Justin, are NOT to play hero once we get there. My job is to keep you safe and if I say stay in the car I mean stay in the car. Agreed?"
Everyone looked at him and mumbled their agreements, except Justin. "Agreed, Justin?!" Nick said.
Justin looked up and him and sighed, "Agreed." he said even though his heart was telling him otherwise.
