| Chapter 12 |
| The next morning Mackenzie woke up surprised to find Justin sitting on the edge of the bed watching TV with the volume barely audible. "Oh, sorry." Justin said turning the volume down even more, "I didn't mean to wake you. How are you feeling?" "It's ok. I'm feeling great." she shifted on the bed and groaned with pain. "Ok I'm feeling a little sore. How about you?" "I'm pretty good. I don't even realize I had stitches until I do something with my arm. I brought you breakfast, he said getting up and opening a paper bag with McDonald's written on the side of it. "Don't get too excited it's just some McDonald's." "Are you allowed to do this?" she asked taking a bite of some pancakes. "I don't think so but I won't tell if you don't." he said smiling. Mackenzie looked at his smiling face and remembered everything that had happened the night before. After their laughing fit they both called their family members and spent the rest of the night talking about nothing in particular. They watched as MTV talked about what had happened and Mackenzie was completely fixated on the TV when eyewitnesses started talking about how amazing Justin was. According to everyone around them Justin knew exactly what he was doing and made sure that everything would be ok. She could tell that watching everyone talk so highly of him embarrassed Justin but she didn't care. All she did care about was the fact that Justin was there with her and nothing could of been better. Mackenzie came out of her thoughts when she noticed all about 3 brown paper bags sitting on the floor near the door. "What are those for?" she asked Justin putting the food beside her "They are cards from your fans." Justin said picking up a bag and placing it next to the bed. "They've been coming in all morning." She picked up a hand full of envelopes and began reading through them. "These are so sweet. I had no idea I had this many fans already. Some of these are a little creepy." "I got you something." Justin said when she put the cards aside. "What? Justin you didn't have to get me anything." "Here, this is for you." he said handing her a small box with a yellow rose attached to the top. "Justin..." she said when she saw it. "Just open it! It's nothing to special." he said sliding his hands in his pocket. Mackenzie carefully pulled the top of off the box and looked inside. She pulled out a small cell phone and looked at Justin questioningly. "I told you it was nothing to get excited about. I tried to save your other one", he said holding up a smashed piece of black metal, "but it's destroyed. I already programmed it with all of your numbers. Well, actually Lance programmed it with the numbers that Jenna gave him. Technology and I don't get along. I just thought you could...use another one." "Thank you, Justin. I love it." she said looking at the phone and then back up at him. It was a long shot and she wasn't sure how he would react but she knew she couldn't pass up the opportunity. She slowly reached her hands up and hugged Justin. "Thanks." she said again. Justin pulled away and smiled. He knew that that simple movement had caused many reactions in his heart but his mind had pushed those feelings aside long ago and there was no way he was going to let them resurface. "I...umm..found this too. I think it's yours otherwise I took someone elses keys." He said holding up a small key attached key chain that had 'Mackenzie' written on it. "Well considering that it says my name on it I think its mine." she said realizing that it was her key. "Hey, no need to get cocky. There could be a million Mackenzie's out there. What's the key for? Your apartment or something?" he asked. "No, actually it's to my mom's house in Rhode Island. I could never bring myself to sell it. I used to go there with her every summer just me and my mom." She smiled when she remembered the days she had spent in that house, "We used to spend the days on the beach just relaxing and enjoying each others company. The summer after my mom died, I went up there and stayed in the house with my mom's best friend, Karen. My dad wasn't so crazy about the idea but he knew I was safe with her. I go there as often as I can but it's hard now a days. I love going there and just enjoying the view and relaxing. I wrote some of my best songs up there." she looked over at him and smiled shyly when she realized she had probably given more information than he cared to know. "Sorry about that." "I thought we were past all this sorry stuff." he said looking her in the eyes. She suddenly got nervous under his stare but she couldn't take her eyes away from his. "Yeah...well...I just" she couldn't take it anymore. The way he was looking at her, the way he had placed his hand on hers, the way his eyes shifted from her eyes to her lips. It was now or never and she knew Jenna would beat her if she let this opportunity pass her by. "Mackenzie?" Justin asked quietly "Ummmhmmm?" she said leaning closer "Are you sure...I mean...I think that..." "Don't think." She said before leaning in and finally giving in to any temptations she had. His world tilted and his body tingled as he felt her lips against his. He wasn't ready for this, his heart was telling him to go for it but his mind just kept pushing him away. His past relationship flashed through his mind when he knew he should have been thinking about Mackenzie. "No..." he said pulling back, "I'm sorry, Mackenzie. This...this isn't...I can't. I got to go. Sorry." he said quickly before grabbing his coat and leaving. "Wait...Justin...Please...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..." but he was gone. Tears of frustration formed in her eyes as she slammed her fists into her pillow. Everything had felt so right when she was kissing him and she knew he had felt the same way, but something was causing him to push her away. "Just great, Mackenzie!" she said to herself, "Everything was going perfect and then you had to ruin it!" |
