PRAYER FOR THE POPE

God almighty Father,
we pray for the intentions
of the Pope John Paul II.
He is the Vicar of Christ,
the Bishop of Rome,
the Successor of St. Peter,
the Rock of the Church.
He is the Servant of the Servants of God,
and the seal of unity among bishops,
priests, and faithful.
Grant him your blessings,
that he may fulfill his mandate
for the glory of God and
the salvation of souls.
This we ask through the intercession
of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Amen.

THE POPE
The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church.  As Jesus said:  "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church" (Matthew 16:18).  He is called "Pope", from the Greek pappas, meaning father, because he is the father of all the faithful.  He is also holds these titles:  Vicar of Christ, Bishop of Rome, Successor of St. Peter, Supreme Pontiff, Patriarch of the West, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the State of Vatican City, and Servus Servorum Dei (Servant of the Servants of God).

From the time of St. Peter to John Paul II, there were 264 Popes.  To gain the Plenary Jubilee Indulgence, after Confession and Holy Communion, we have to pray for the intentions of the Pope.  We can pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary, one Apostolic Creed; or the Holy Rosary; or the Way of the Cross.  In addition, we may conclude with the following prayer.
