Chapter Meetings
The local chapter of the National Stuttering Association is a self-help support group, comprised of people who stutter, to help one another cope with our stuttering. As a chapter, we aim to:
-
understand, accept, and control our stuttering to the best of our ability
-
increase our self-confidence and self-esteem, regardless of fluency
-
improve communication skills, and
-
learn to make speech an easier and more enjoyable experience.
When & Where?
Our regular meetings are on the second Thursday of the month at UPMC Rehabilitation Hospital (Children's Institute) in the Squirrel Hill area of Pittsburgh -- at the corner of Northumberland and Shady Avenues -- and on the fourth Thursday of each month at Panera Bread Restaurant on Murray Avenue (Squirrel Hill). Meetings start at 7:00 pm. Admission to our meetings is free. Map and driving directions.
What Do We Do?
We generally begin meetings with a roundtable introduction of each member and what they have experienced since the last meeting. We frequently discuss our individual concerns and experiences. We may explore ideas about the causes and treatment of stuttering and experiment with various fluency techniques. Occasionally we have guest speakers and special presentations. Everyone is give an ample opportunity to participate and is encouraged (but not compelled) to do so.
Usually, our meetings are devoted to group discussion and sharing. Sometimes there are special presentations or workshops for practicing fluency and improving communication skills.
Our meetings offer a warm, supportive environment in which stuttering is fully accepted. We do not require the use of any particular fluency method. Members are free to stutter openly, to use voluntary stuttering, or to practice whatever fluency methods with which they feel comfortable.
Family members and speech-language professionals or students are also welcome.
