| Welcome to the pleasant land of Hispania, navigator! Hispania is a province of Nova Roma, an organization dedicated to the study and restoration of the culture, religion, political system and virtues of Ancient Rome. Visit the Nova Roma web site, and apply for citizenship today. |
| The Hispania Province of Nova Roma geografically covers the territory of Spain, a kingdom placed in Southwestern Europe, in the Iberian Peninsula. Hispania has a strong relationship with Ancient Rome. Publius Cornelius Scipio conquered Carthago Nova in 209 BCE, thus beginning the Roman invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. After several centuries of war against native tribes (with episodes like the siege of Numantia or the revolt of Viriatus), it was declared provincia pacata (pacified province) under the reign of Augustus (24 d.C.). Hispania came to be one of the most important territories of the Roman Empire. It was fully romanized, and gave birth to several capital characters of Roman history, like emperors Trajan, Hadrian and Theodose, the philosopher Seneca, the poets Martial and Lucan or the grammatic Quintilian. Even today, Rome lives on in the languages, customs, cultures and traditions of the peoples of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as in our cities and historical sites. Join us into an exploratory trip of what Hispania and Nova Roma have to offer to you. What is Nova Roma? NOVA ROMA is dedicated to the study and restoration of classical Roman religion, culture, and society. Founded 2,750 years after the Eternal City itself, we are striving to bring about a rebirth of classical Roman civilization, which stands as the bedrock of Western culture. NOVA ROMA is involved in a variety of activities related to our goal of restoring classical Roman civilization in all its glory. These include: * Researching and adapting classical religious rites, rituals, and lore for modern use in the restored Religio Romana (Roman pagan religion), * Forging ties with and sponsoring Roman-era military reenactment units across the world, helping inform others about Roman culture, * Promoting Classical Studies in general and archaeological excavations at Roman sites in particular, and * Coming together with one another both face-to-face and via the Internet to forge a genuine community. Please note that, even though we are involved in the restoration of Roman religion, persons of any religious or ethnic background or sexual orientation are more than welcome to join us. All that is required is a love of all things Roman. What activities does Nova Roma promote? When one has received the confirmation of citizenship, it is very common to feel somehow lost. The usual question is: "And what do I do now?" As Nova Roma offers activities that cover every aspect of Roman civilization, it is very probable that a new citizen finds something that appeals to him or her among these suggestions. Mailing Lists Nowadays, the easiest way to get involved in the ambicious project of reconstruction that Nova Roma represents is through the mailing lists of Nova Roma. Many of the lists of Nova Roma can be accessed from here. There are mailing lists for many provinces, sodalitates (interest clubs) and gentes (familiar clans). There are three very peculiar lists. The first is the main Nova Roma list. This is the main discussion forum of Nova Roma, although the majority of the posts refer to the politics of the Republic. It is in English and has a high traffic level (around 30 posts per day). For those who feel intimidated by the main list, there is an announcement list. Just the official announces of the magistrates appear there. All the citizens of Hispania should subscribe to the provincial mailing list. This is the best way to contact the citizens of Hispania. The provincial list is mainly in Spanish, although posts in English are welcome. Local Chapters and Legions Besides the mailing lists, there are other ways to get involved in activities, like the local chapters, military recreation legions, etc... In the next month, at least one local chapter will appear in the Madrid area, where the cives will meet each other in the real world to celebrate their romanitas. The provincial government of Hispania is also planning to organize a Legio to recreate the Roman military tradition. Additional Information A good page for new citizens can be found here. I urge you to investigate the possibilities that the main site offers as well. If any of you has any doubt, do not hesitate to express it on the provincial mailing list of Hispania. I also invite you to explore this site to know more deeply the activities that Nova Roma supports in Hispania. You can begin with the FORVM. |
