FIRST DAY
...At least that's what the training video tells Andy as he sits there on his first day at work in his purple and banana yellow uniform wondering why he even came to the job interview. The first people he meets are Stacey and Leanne, and Leanne has him scared and confused in moments...mainly because she is like that, but also because he's not even had a chance to tell them his name before she is trying to set him up with Stacey.
Already late from work, Stacey and Leanne rush down onto the shop floor; Leanne into the kitchen where she immediately starts flirting with her co-worker Danny, the floor manager, and Stacey onto the till area, where she is given a stern lecturing by the no-it-all obnoxious co-worker Sophie.
Andy continues to watch the training video with growing dread. Downstairs, Mike the store manager arrivesm and goes into his usual overdrive of criticism and bitching at the staff. No one likes him, particularly Danny who is lumbered with all the work. Mike strolls upstairs and introuduces himself to Andy, telling him he's always there with his staff. Then Andy is thrown on till, headlong into the middle of a dinner rush...and he's only been working there an hour.
While the rest of the staff struggle with the stress of the dinner rush, Mike lazes about in his office complainig about the incompetency and lack of interest...of his local football team. He has no idea what is really happening in his store, but then again, he never really does. Downstairs, Sophie remains chirpy, quoting company regulation after regulation and generally annoying the customers as well as her co-workers. Stacey, hopeless as always, spills drinks and fries, mixes up orders...and Andy...he desperately tries to stay afloat. When Mike does come downstairs, its to tell them that the area manager Linda is coming in at three and then attempts to 'handle the situation' by in his eyes 'getting the staff to pull their socks up' and take control of the kitchen. By the end of dinner, everyone wants to shove his head in a vat of hot oil.
And then the moment of terror finally arrives as Linda walks through the door at 2:59pm. She reduces Stacey to tears, tells Danny just how shite he is at running the shift and puts Mike firmly under her thumb. The crew get their own back when she demands to do a taste test, and they give her a freshly cooked burger with a couple of extra dressings, cheese, ketchup, spit, grime off a shoe. Lucky for them she gives out her first compliment.
But it is not over when she leaves. Stacey bitches about her to an already terrified Andy, and Danny promptly tells Mike where to stick his job, coming close to gathering a mass exodus and leaving the 'incompetent wanker' to run the store by itself. For Andy, it has been one hell of a first day.
