ELLERIGAN QUEST
I realised from the moment I left school, that the story would have to become a multi book saga if I was going to fit everything I wanted into this enormous adventure. First it was a two book story, but I finally settled on a trilogy...this was by the time I was seventeen and redrafting the early stuff.
I still wasn't happy however. The early section of The Goblingod still seemed to be rushing along at breakneck speed. And what became the climatic end chapters to this first book (I won't explain what now in case you haven't read the Ellerigan Quest) happened a third the way through my original book 1 of 3 . It was too big a turning point to be lost so early. Secondly, I wasn't happy with the main character Lucas' first major adventure. I wanted to build up his character further before he gets to invlved in the rest of the saga and develop other characters, and show the world I had created a bit more before I destroy it with all the conflict and war that happens.
So, I split this first book in two again, and The Goblingod became four books. (Eventually it will become five as I want to take the second half of what was the third book, and the first bit of the last book and make that a novel in it's own...a little complicated, but it'll all make sense in the end). This new first book, Ellerigan Quest needed something else though. I had gone straight into the main war plot before. Now I needed to show the build up. So what did I do? I created a brand new main character solely for this first book, Lord Cordrane. And he fitted in perfectly. Friends who have read the book can't believe he didn't exist in the whole story until a couple of years ago. And I completely altered and extended Lucas' first adventure. With these two new strands I was able to give a good paced beginning to the whole saga, something I am now very happy with...
