The Southeast Region is home to 4 National Parks,
3 of which are in the State of Flordia. The Southeast is
also home to several other NPS Units, Historical Sites and National Battlefields.
Biscayne
Protected reef area, established as a National Monument in 1968 and designated
as a National Park in 1980.
Dry Tortugas Cluster of 7 islands composed
of coral reefs and sand. The area was discovered by Ponce De Leon in
1513. There is no fresh water on the islands, the area is known to be
a serious navigation hazard, and is the site of hundreds of shipwrecks. Established
as a National Monument in 1935 and then designated as National Park in 1992.
Everglades North America's Only
Sub-Tropic Preserve and the only place known to have both alligaters and
crocodiles co-exist. Established as a National Park in 1947.
Great Smoky Mountains One of
the largest protected areas East of the Mississippi River. The Park
consist of 800 square miles along the Tennessee North Carolinia state line.
Established as a National Park in 1934.
