ELECTRONIC MAIL

Electronic mail (e-mail) is the system that enables transmission of messages from computer to computer over the Internet. When you send an e-mail message it passes from your computer to another computer, called a mail server, then on to another as it travels over the Internet. Once it arrives at the destination mail server, the message is stored in an electronic mailbox until the person it is addressed to retrieves it on their computer.

To use E-mail you need two things:

  • Special software - most computers have the necessary software already installed, e.g. Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook but others can be downloaded free from the Websites of the manufacturers e.g. Incredimail or MSN Explorer Hotmail.
  • An e-mail account - this will be supplied as part of your contract with the Internet Service Provider who provides your connection to the Internet. This account gives you a password (or lets you choose your own), an e-mail address and a "mail box".
  • Ray Tomlinson invented electronic mail in 1971. To find out how this came about please click on his name.

If you would like to send me an e-mail I would be very pleased to hear from you. All you need to do to use the "mailto" facility is to click on my name: Joan Robinson and an e-mail form will appear for you to use.
