Good Recipes
March 2001
Here is a very successful diet from one of my students (Beatriz)

My Last Diet

In 1996 I was very fat and I decided to start a diet.  The diet was very strong and strict.  In the first week I visited an Institute every day to receive injectinos.

The first three days the food was very greasy
Breakfast: Eggs with bacon, ham and butter.

Lunch: Fried Loin of pig ( a fried pork loin)
Salad:  tomoatoes, lettuce, avocado and tartar sauce or blue cheese dressing.
Dessert:  Chocolate and peanuts

Dinner: Fried beef or fried chicken and salad (the same as lunch).
Dessert:  more chocolate

The fourth day I began the different diet.  I eliminated sugar, oil,. bread, pizzas, pastry, spaghetti, cheese, etc.

Breakfast:  Three soda crackers.
Lunch:  Chicken or fish or grilled meat with vegetables (boiled or baked)
or
SALAD:  lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumber with salt vinegar or lemon, oil free.
Dessert:  fruits.

Melon or watermelon or apple or pears or paopaya, apricot pineapple.
These fruits are forbidden:  bananas, grapes, and mangoes.

In the second week I received more injections on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and then I was weighed.

Rules:  One day a week I ate only pineapple or watermelon and 10 glasses of water.

In the fourth month I began the maintenance diet program.  In less than 120 days, I lost 17 kilograms or about 37 pounds.
Here is a photo of Beatriz' pretty bird (that sings in Portuguese and Spanish!)
Here is a photo of one of  Monica's paintings.
HOMEWORK:  Write an article about your country

What was an unusual thing that you saw when you first came to the USA?

What is surprising about your country?  If a US visitor goes to your country, what in your country will surprise or amaze or confuse the visitor?

PRONUNCIATION PRACTICE
(BEAUTIFUL)

A quote from President G.W. Bush's State of the Union address:
Government should be active, but limited.  It should be engaged but not overbearing.

Government has a role.  But too much government crowds out initiative and hard work, private charity and the private economy.

Some people want more government, regardless of the cost.  Others want less government, regardless of the need.
