Frigid temps, a brisk wind and clear sunny skies greeted NOVAMOG for our 10 March 2002 meet at Six Flags, MD, to watch the Chesapeake Region of the Porsche Club of America hold its autocross.

We had 5 XRs along with two members coming out in their beater cars (Dan Dunn and wife in his White 97 Mustang GT and Eric Scuderi stylin in his late model Cadillac). Greg Larsen will have to receive special honors as the most dedicated member, again arriving all the way from Martinsburg, WVA in his totally restored 89 XR. Rob McDonald arrived from Germantown, MD in his recently purchased Rosso Red 87 XR and its looking great. We all have to thank Rob for bringing the most excellent donuts. Rounding out the group were Damien Alexander in his 86 XR, Richard Curtis in his 89 and myself with our 89. We originally anticipated that one of the Merkurs would participate in the autox but that did not come to pass.

The parking lot of the autocross was nearly a car show all by itself with nearly every model Porsche makes represented along with a smattering of BMWs, Intergras, VWs, Subarus, and even a few Mustangs thrown in. The course was very longish with most cars taking over 5 minutes to complete. The PCA runs a very well organized event and you could see at least 10 loaner helmets available at the start line for anyone who needed one.

The cold weather was a bit much for a meet in an open parking lot. We stuck it out as long as we could but by 1100 we were saying so long and heading on our way. Nonetheless, a fun meet. A funny thought occurred to me as we headed home with heater on full blast. That is, the entire parking lot could have been completely empty and it still would have been a fun meet. It doesn't matter what else is going on and it doesn't matter where we're at, whenever two or more Merkheads together, it's a meet and it won't take more than a minute to be butts and elbows under the hood of our Merkurs.
