| While waiting for your referral: * Make sure all of your immunizations are completed at least 6 months prior to traveling. *Interview and choose a pediatrician (click here for pediatrician questions) *Read as much as you can about China (you won't have much time to read once you are home) *Have a will prepared if you don't currently have one. *Select guardian for your child should anything ever happen to you. *Learn some basic Chinese phrases. Consider taking a Mandarin class while waiting. *Order baby furniture and get the nursery ready. (Put the crib together in the room it will be in as it may not fit through a standard door opening). *If you have pets, arrange to have a pet sitter or arrange kenneling. *Arrange for someone to pay your bills while you are out of the country or pay in advance of leaving. Many online bill paying services allow you to pay ahead and will debit account on date you specify. *Check your luggage and make sure it is appropriate size for trip. This may depend on what time of year you will travel. Check zippers and locks to make sure they are secure. Consider purchasing some Packmates as they will smush clothing down and allow you to pack more. *Childproof house *Stock up on diapers and wipes from Warehouse store such as Costco, Sam's, etc. These will come in handy when you get home and you also won't have the expense of purchasing them while you are on family leave. Purchase size 3 or larger. *Read childcare books, consider taking a first time parent class at a local hospital. *Take a CPR course *Join an FCC group or another adoption support group. *Order translation cards from ChinaConnection *Buy a good baby carrier and practice with a sack of potatoes. A good 15 pound workout!! Work on your arm and back muscles. *Get Visa photos *Research post adoption tasks such as re-adoption, social security card, legal name change, child's US passport, proof of US Citizenship. Start gathering the any applications and paperwork in advance. *Prepare a box to sent to the orphanage when referral comes. Include a disposable camera, soft blanket and other small items. *Research daycare and child friendly places such as restaurants, playgrounds, playgroups, etc. *Spend time doing what you like to do now. You will not have much time to do anything once the baby comes home. Spend a special night out, visit childless friends, read books and enjoy the quiet time. *Save extra money in an emergency account for unexpected expenses once you are home. *Get your car serviced, complete any home repairs that have been put off. *Research car seats, try out models you think you would like in your vehicle to see which ones fit and are easiest to use. Try different sizes because you won't be sure how old/big your child will be. |
