| In 1611 Pieter Paul Rubens bought this house, now known as the "Rubenshuis". There were parts added to the existing house, providing a studio for him to work in. The house has a beautiful inner court - yard, Rubens himself designed the Baroque- styled portal which leads to the Flemish - Italian Renaissance garden. He lived here till the day he died. After his death, the house was sold several times and in 1931 the city of Antwerp started procedures for expropriatation. In 1937 the house became property of the Antwerp council. The restoration was started immediatly and ended in 1946. On june 21st of that same year, the house was opened to the public. Ever since, it has displayed paintings of Rubens himself, artifacts that belonged to him and artifacts , furniture and objects originating from the 17th century. In recent years the selfportret of Rubens, the unfinished painting "Hendrik fighting the battle of Paris" and Van Dyck's "Family portrait of the Duke of Buckingham" were added to the collection.
