* 'Local Alert' - Wymondham Town Council were proposing a cull of Muntjac Deer which were apparently invading the town's cemetery back in October . . . Great news here . . . the Council have suspended any moves to carry out a cull. Read the original Evening News press article.
* Bacton Woods Deer Cull - An update . . .
The disappointing and distressing news that Forest Enterprise has murdered three deer at Bacton is countered, to some extent, by the fact that the campaign has at least brought the entire issue into the public focus and has forced them to make unprecedented efforts to justify their actions. There has also been some support from local MPs to question the methods adopted in 'managing' the woodland and the failure to comply with requirements of giving notice for the closure of public footpaths through the woods. This is no consolation, however, for the loss of these beautiful animals. We must remain vigilant against further attempts to excuse the slaughter of more deer as a means of economic management.
For background information on this case, please read the Eastern Daily Press reports of Monday, 3rd and Tuesday, 4th February. (Please be patient as these images may take a little while to load).
* Scottish Islands Hedgehog Cull . . .
The long expected cull of hedgehogs in the Western Isles of North and South Uist is expected to commence on Monday, 31st March. The culling will be countered by a dedicated band of animal lovers who are desperate to rescue as many hedgehogs as possible and relocate them to the mainland and all parts of the UK.
