* New local alert . . . Fur is making a comeback in Norwich, but not in the way you might think!

Please be on the lookout for fluffy ornaments and toys sold in the city's shops. Home Express in Castle Mall (Level 1) definitely has these items on sale. Items noted on Wednesday, 10th July were fluffy 'curled up cats' and 'twin owls'. Other types of fluffy ornaments were also on display. A label affixed to the underside of each ornament states that the item is made from rabbit/goat fur and is a by-product of the food industry. We believe this to be completely untrue. Rabbits are being bred especially for their fur and suffer miserable lives penned in tiny cages in huge sheds often without light, before meeting their final deaths when their necks are callously broken. Many rabbits are skinned alive! This is factory farming at its worst! Please complain to the manager of any store known to be selling these highly exploitative goods. For further information on this cruel practise, please visit CAFT's website.

Download a sample letter and send to a store near you that sells these so called 'ornaments'.

* Proposed hedgehog cull in the Western Isles . . . Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) are planning a major cull of hedgehogs on the Hebridean islands of North and South Uist. There are around 5000 hedgehogs on the islands and SNH believe they are behind a significant decline in waders as they eat the birds' eggs. We do not believe a cull of the animals is necessary as alternative methods of control are available, such as transporting to the mainland and sterilisation to reduce reproduction.

Please take the time to write a suitable letter of protest and send it to the following address:

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society, Hedgehog House, Dhustone, Ludlow, Shropshire, SY8 3PL

The BHPS will forward your letter on to the appropriate authority in Scotland.
