Urge your MP to sign our Early Day Motion (EDM) on UK monkey experiments

Following the BUAV's haunting exposé of the appalling suffering endured by
marmoset monkeys at Cambridge University, and the launch of our Zero Option
campaign to end all UK monkey experiments, EDM 1663 has now been tabled; it
refers to some of the key issues such as our call for an independent inquiry
into Cambridge University and an independent review of all UK primate
research, but at the same time remains sufficiently broad to hopefully
attract support from a cross-section of MPs.

Our EDM has already been signed by the following MPs:
Ann Widdecombe (Con: Maidstone & The Weald)
Norman Baker (Lib Dem: Lewes)
Tony Banks (Lab: West Ham)
David Amess (Con: Southend West)
David Taylor (Lab: N.W Leicestershire)
Mike Hancock (Lib Dem: Portsmouth South)
Lynne Jones (Lab: Birmingham, Selly Oak)
Kevin McNamara (Lab: Hull North)
Bob Russel (Lib Dem: Colchester)
John Austin (Lab: Erith & Thamesmead)
Kevin Brennan (Lab: Cardiff West)
Alan Simpson (Lab: Nottingham South)

GET ACTIVE!
Please write (or email where possible) to your MP and urge them to sign EDM
1663 Marmoset Brain Research as soon as possible. Parliament's Summer recess
takes effect from Wednesday 24th July until mid-October, although many MPs
remain in Westminster for a while after the recess. So please send a letter
to your MP, both at Westminster and their constituency address, or email
them if that facility is available. Our EDM will remain active until the end
of this Parliamentary session (late Autumn). You can read the EDM text below -

EDMs can be extremely useful in both gauging political opinion on an issue
as well as raising its political profile ready for further
political/campaign work. It is vital that we persuade as many MPs to sign
EDM 1663 as possible, so please do contact your MP today.

Contact details:
1.    You can find out the name of your MP at
http://www.parliament.uk/commons/lib/lists.htm
2. Once you've found out your MP's name, you can write to them at House of
Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.
3. You can also email your MP from the following website page
http://www.parliament.uk/commons/lib/alms.htm (if your MP has an email
facility).
4. Always check out our EDM 1663 at http://edm.ais.co.uk/ before contacting
your MP. This web page allows you to search for our EDM by number and to
check the names of MPs who have already signed on. The BUAV will also
endeavour to keep an up to date list on our own website at
www.buav.org
Please do not contact an MP if they have already signed the EDM.

EDM 1663:
"This House believes that in light of the investigation by the British Union
for the Abolition of Vivisection of marmoset brain research at the
University of Cambridge and the concerns regarding the underestimation by
the Home Office of the high degree of suffering likely to be experienced by
the animals in categorising the licences as only 'moderate', calls on the
Government to (a) set up an independent inquiry into the Cambridge research
and the use of primates in experiments in the UK more generally; and (b)
introduce far greater transparency into the regulation of animal
experiments, with particular reference to the cost:benefit test and the
severity of suffering likely to be involved."
