The greyhound . . .

some essential information . . .

The sleek, elegant and majestic greyhound was one of the first dogs to be domesticated by man and the dogs you see today have changed very little from those pictured on the walls of the ancient tombs of the Egyptian Pharaohs.

The greyhound type has been dated as far back as 2000BC, outdating the Greek and Roman empires.

The greyhound is believed to be one of the first dogs in America.

Revered for their speed and stamina, this athlete of the canine world is an adaptable character and is one of the purest and oldest breeds which have no known genetic problems.

The word 'greyhound' has nothing to do with colour, but in fact stems from the Anglo-Saxon word 'Gre-hunder' meaning 'dog hunter' or 'high order of rank'. They are 'sight' or 'gaze' hounds which chase by sight rather than scent.

Greyhounds are the unsung heroes of one of the most popular spectator sports worldwide and were once only permitted to be owned by nobility.

Greyhounds in general are docile, gentle and patient creatures and are hugely appreciative of human affection, probably because of their isolated upbringing.
