B.A. in Latin American Area Studies, minor in Spanish,
                            Texas Tech University,TX
Master in Fine Arts,Clay and Sculpture,
                            Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, CA
Cecily Smith Maples has been working in clay since 1974 when she took a clay class for the first time to fulfill a humanities requiremnt.  Needless to say, she fell in love with the medium and has been working in it ever since.  After graduating from Texas Tech, she decided to get a Masters in Fine Art.  She did her leveling work for this degree at Texas Tech University and taught clay as a graduate teaching assistant.  Her MFA was granted in 1978 from Claremont, where she also worked as a graduate teaching assistant.
Cecily's love for both clay and teaching set the pattern for her career.  Since gaining her degree, she has taught pottery at the MacKenzie Terrace Pottery Center at Lubbock Christian University and in the public schools as an artist-in-residence.  She also taught many workshops.
By 1972, she was ready to strike out on her own.  With the acquistion of some commercial property (including an industrial warehouse) at 4509 Clovis Highway, Lubbock, she and her husband, Norvell Maples started the ARTary.  From its inception, the ARTary was to be a place where artists could congregate and learn and network and thereby, get a leg up on their art careers.  The ARTary provides classes, communal studio space, and access to supplis and equipment making it possible for people to explore clay and more recently, Precious Metal Clay (PMC) as art media.
A resume is lengthy but available by request via mail.
