| General Information; Participation in the Northern Maine Fair is a chance for 4-H members to be recognized for the projects they have done and skills they have gained over the past 4-H year. club members and independents who are properly registerecd with County 4-H programs from any part of Maine are eligible to compete for premiums at the Northern Maine Fair provided County and State 4-H rules and regulations are followed. No entry fees are charged for 4-H events. 4-H Exhibit Hall 4-H exhibits entered at the Exhibit Hall should reflect ongoing work done by the member in their project area during this 4-H year. Life Skills Wheels/judging cards must accompany each project, as well as a Northern Maine Fair computer entry form. Although project records are not collected at the fair, members are expecteed to submit a project record on any project area exhibited. 4-H members from any county in Maine may enter exhibits, but should check with the Extension Office for rules that may differ from those in their county. Club exhibits and projects may be delivered to the Northern Maine Fair Exhibit Hall between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 AND from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, July 28, 2004. each club is responsible for setting up their members entries. Judging will take place on the afternoon of July 28. 4-h members, parents and volunteers may not be present during judging. All displays must be picked up between 9 a.m. and noon on Sunday, August 8. Projects removed prior to this time will not receive premiums. 4-H Division 200 - Club Exhibits Premiums: 1st - $30.00; 2nd - $25.00; 3rd - $20.00; All other places will receive Worhty Exhibitor Premium - $10.00. 2004 Club Exhibits 4-H Face of the Future Your club's 4-H Club Exhibit should tell the public about some aspect of 4-H in general as well as some special information about your club and its projects and activities. Exhibits should be constructed by the club members with guidance from the adult volunteers. the club's name and town and names and ages of members who worked on the exhibit must be displayed. The display may include both poster and display items. Please contact the extension office for a complete list of criteria for displays. Member Project Exhibits Premiums: Blue - $3.00; Red - $2.00; White - $1.00 Judges Choice Ribbons will be awarded to recognize a unique or outstanding project, which exemplifies an unusually high degree of creativity, care, time or research, by the 4-H'er. Rules: 1. exhibits may be submitted by enrolled 4-H members in maine. Projects must be those currently carried by the member and entries must be produced or prepared during the current 4-H year. 2. Members may enter only one exhibit per category except where multiple classes are listed. In that case, one entry per class will be allowed. Multiple items will be entered and judged as one project. 3. each exhibit must be accompanied by a fully and accurately completed exhibit card/Life Skills Wheel card. 4. The exhibits displayed must represent the efforts of 4-H member and no one else. 5. Project using kits may not be entered except in categories where it is noted ok. 6. Exhibits will be judged by the Danish System. each worthy project will be awarded ribbons and premiums on the basis of how well it displays appropriate skills for the member's age and skill level. 7. The fair will afford the best protection possible for project exhibits. However, Cooperative Extension and the Fair distinctly disclaim any liability for loss or damage to exhibits. Exhibitor of Character Awards Raising, showing and marketing livestock is an important project for many Maine 4-H members. Character education, a key piece of the 4-H plan of work, has an important role to play in livestock work. The "Exhibiting Character" Awards program recognizes 4-H livestock exhibitors who show exemplary character at Maine fairs. This recognition program highlights for 4-H members, parents, adult volunteers, judges, fair officials and the public the importance of ethical behavior and decision making. Specific criteria based on good character pillars of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship may be obtained from the County 4-H Office. 4-H Livestock Special Notices. 1. 4-H families are reminded that alcohol and drug possession or use by members on the fairgrounds is strictly prohibited. Members who violate this rule will be inelligible to show. All family members are reminded that state and local laws must be obeyed. 4-H members are expected to show respectful behavior to each other, to adults and family members, and to the public at all times. 2. Any animal which cannot be controlled by its handler will be returned immediately to the barn and is disqualified. 3. Only handlers and judges are allowed in the show ring. 4. All animals for whom there is an approved rabies vaccine should be innoculated prior to arrival at the fair. 5. All animals must be in good health. Upon arriving at the fairground, all 4-H animals should be inspected by the Livestock Superintendent, and if found unfit must be returned home. Evidence of ringworm, warts, mange, foot rot, sore mouth, or any other infectious condition or disease will be cause for removal. Animals with these conditions may not be exhibited at any other fair until cleared by the State Veterinarian and released by the Division of Animal Industry. Warts may not be removed on the fairgrounds. 6. All animals must be properly cared for at all times while on the fairgrounds. 7. Animals belonging to a 4-H member must be cared for and prepared for showing by the member. Members may be assisted by other members. If there is a safety concern, an adult should be close enough to intervene if necessary for the safety of the members or bystanders. 8. All animals being shown must have an Animal Approval Form on file in the Extension Office by the required date. Members must have a copy of this form with them at the fair. This form must be presented to the 4-H professional before the show begins. Substitutions of livestock may be made as long as the substituted animal is on the Animal Approval Form and the 4-H superintendent is notified before the show. 9. All animals must be housed in the assigned areas. 10. All rules and notices stated by the Fair Livestock Superintendent apply to 4-H members and families and any exception can be granted only by the Livestock Superintendent. Please read those rules carefully. UMCE Regulations for 4-H Shows At Maine Agricultural Fairs Approved October, 18, 1995 1. January 1, is the base date for the age of the exhibitor. 2. Age Requirements: 4-H exhibitor must have turned 9 before midnight December 31, but not 19 before midnight of December 31, in order to show in dairy, beef, goat, sheep, swine, and horse shows. 4-h members age 7 or 8 as of January 1, may also participate in goat or sheep shows using goats or sheep born on or before January 1, of the show year. no ram lambs. Collars are required for goats and halters for sheep and a lead is permitted. 4-H members age 5 or 6 as of Janaury 1, will be limited to small animals, domestic pets, and poultry shows. Shows and classes for 5-8 year olds are not required but left to the discretion of the respective fairs. 3. At least one adult, other than the judge must be present in the show ring with exhibitors age 7 or 8 as a safety precaustion . 4. Persons assisting in th elivestock show ring must be 9 as of January 1. 5. Leased animals will be permitted in 4-h shows. 6. All shows will require that exhibitors present a signed Standard Animal Approvaal Form for 4-H Animal Shows to the 4-H professiona l before the required dates. 7.
