This Page Is Dedicated To My Sister, Lisa.
My sister, Lisa, was diagnosed with (AML), Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, on March 8, 2002. At the age of 38, she past away, on March 14, 2006. The following year, my aunt (my mother's sister), lost her battle with colon cancer. In November 2005, another aunt (my mother's only surviving sibling), was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer.  She lost her battle, January 4, 2007.
Every year, the incidence of newly diagnosed cases of cancer increases dramatically. By the end of 2006, it is estimated that there will be nearly 1.4 million new, life-threatening, cases of cancer. The second leading cause of death in the United States, it is estimated that one in four deaths are directly related to cancer.
Relay For Life Walkers, at the 2003 RFL, in Massena, NY.
Each year, the American Cancer Society hosts a nation-wide fundraiser event called Relay For Life. Teams of walkers hold group or individual fundraisers and collect pledges of monetary donations, in support of this very important cause. During the actual event, each team  participates in a walking relay, at various high school tracks and local parks  This event plays a major role in gaining the financial support researchers need, to continue their work, to help find a cure for these deadly diseases. In 2006, this nation-wide event raised an astounding $373 Million Dollars. To find out more information on how to participate in the annual Relay For Life, in your area, visit the American Cancer Society, at their website.
American Cancer Society
Like me, millions of people have grieved the loss of a loved one to these incredibly deadly diseases. Many people living today are survivors, who have won their battles with cancer. Either of these experiences is life-changing. When faced with the uncertainty of prognosis, often times related friends and family feel a sense of hopelessness.
During my sister's illness, and her sudden passing, I too, felt that sense of hopelessness. When the grieving subsided, and life returned to normal, I began thinking about what I could do to help find a cure for cancer. Even more importantly, what I could do to help existing cancer patients who rely on others to make them better. Please, consider one or more of these options, to help win the fight and find a cure.
