As many as 324,000 women experience intimate partner violence during a pregnancy every year.

Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner or a significant other.  Abuse may be in one or more of these forms: physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person.  Domestic violence does not discriminate by race, age, sexual orientation, religion, or gender.  It affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.  Often, it is unclear to an individual whether or not they are being abused due to the mixed emotions, coupled with all the other ups and downs that occur in relationships.  In many instances, it may take the observations of friends or family to recognize the existance of abuse in a relationship.  It is important for victims of domestic violence to realize that there is a way out.  With support and guidance from your local CAVA (Citizens Against Violent Acts) Organization, victims can escape an abusive relationship and begin a journey of healing and wellness.  If you don't have a local chapter for Domestic Violence Prevention, please called the National Domestic Violence Hotline at ( 1-800-799-7233 ).  For more information visit the National Domestic Hotline website.
