Distracted, Sam stumbles in the road. Recent rain has turned the hard-packed earth into a river, a hazard to a roper with wares to take to the fair. To his uncle's dismay, Sam is less worried about the ropes slung across his back than the herbs back in his small garden.
"Don't dawdle, Sam," Uncle Andy admonishes.
Three years, Sam has three years of apprenticeship to his uncle. Three years until he can to marry Lily and start his hole. As he forces himself forward, Sam clings to his dream of a flower garden outside his own door.
"Coming, Uncle."
