| | Here is a collection of information on the health problems Buhunds can be affected by.
- Pulverulent Cataract - "buhundkatarakt" -- Please note that the direct
translation of the Norwegian word "katarakt" DOES NOT translate to
the English word cataract. This condition is not one that affects vision..
- Lens Changes in the Buhund
-- this is a scanned image of a document which describes the 3 different
conditions which can affect a Buhund -- the focus of this document is the "buhundkatarakt".
- Type I - a feather-like change, which affects the suture lines
in the lens - this is said to NOT affect vision, unless the feather
lines are dense. Dogs with this condition CAN be bred from, but should
NOT be bred to another dog with the same condition
- Type II - the Developmental Cataract -- which causes BLINDNESS.
Dogs with developmental cataracts should NEVER be bred from.
- Type III - the Pulverulent Cataract, also known as the "buhundkatarakt."
Dogs with this condition CAN be bred from, but should NOT be bred to
another dog with the same condition.
- Hip Dysplasia
... like just about every other breed in the world, Buhunds
can be affected by hip dysplasia... this is why it is CRITICAL for EVERY
breeder to ensure EVERY puppy they sell, whether for breeding/showing stock
or as pets encourage the new owners to have their puppies tested for hip
dysplasia.
It is a simple x-ray exam, done under anesthetic, which can cost less than 100
dollars. This link
will take you to an interesting article I found on the web, complete with 2
photos of x-rays.
